New American Standard Bible 1995 | New International Version |
When Israel was a youth I loved him, And out of Egypt I called My son. | 1"When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. |
The more they called them, The more they went from them; They kept sacrificing to the Baals And burning incense to idols. | 2But the more they were called, the more they went away from me. They sacrificed to the Baals and they burned incense to images. |
Yet it is I who taught Ephraim to walk, I took them in My arms; But they did not know that I healed them. | 3It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by the arms; but they did not realize it was I who healed them. |
I led them with cords of a man, with bonds of love, And I became to them as one who lifts the yoke from their jaws; And I bent down and fed them. | 4I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love. To them I was like one who lifts a little child to the cheek, and I bent down to feed them. |
They will not return to the land of Egypt; But Assyria-- he will be their king Because they refused to return to Me. | 5"Will they not return to Egypt and will not Assyria rule over them because they refuse to repent? |
The sword will whirl against their cities, And will demolish their gate bars And consume them because of their counsels. | 6A sword will flash in their cities; it will devour their false prophets and put an end to their plans. |
So My people are bent on turning from Me. Though they call them to the One on high, None at all exalts Him. | 7My people are determined to turn from me. Even though they call me God Most High, I will by no means exalt them. |
How can I give you up, O Ephraim? How can I surrender you, O Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart is turned over within Me, All My compassions are kindled. | 8"How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I treat you like Admah? How can I make you like Zeboyim? My heart is changed within me; all my compassion is aroused. |
I will not execute My fierce anger; I will not destroy Ephraim again. For I am God and not man, the Holy One in your midst, And I will not come in wrath. | 9I will not carry out my fierce anger, nor will I devastate Ephraim again. For I am God, and not a man-- the Holy One among you. I will not come against their cities. |
They will walk after the LORD, He will roar like a lion; Indeed He will roar And His sons will come trembling from the west. | 10They will follow the LORD; he will roar like a lion. When he roars, his children will come trembling from the west. |
They will come trembling like birds from Egypt And like doves from the land of Assyria; And I will settle them in their houses, declares the LORD. | 11They will come from Egypt, trembling like sparrows, from Assyria, fluttering like doves. I will settle them in their homes," declares the LORD. |
Ephraim surrounds Me with lies And the house of Israel with deceit; Judah is also unruly against God, Even against the Holy One who is faithful. | 12Ephraim has surrounded me with lies, Israel with deceit. And Judah is unruly against God, even against the faithful Holy One. |
