King James Bible | New International Version |
Praise ye the LORD. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. | 1Praise the LORD. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever. |
Who can utter the mighty acts of the LORD? who can shew forth all his praise? | 2Who can proclaim the mighty acts of the LORD or fully declare his praise? |
Blessed are they that keep judgment, and he that doeth righteousness at all times. | 3Blessed are those who act justly, who always do what is right. |
Remember me, O LORD, with the favour that thou bearest unto thy people: O visit me with thy salvation; | 4Remember me, LORD, when you show favor to your people, come to my aid when you save them, |
That I may see the good of thy chosen, that I may rejoice in the gladness of thy nation, that I may glory with thine inheritance. | 5that I may enjoy the prosperity of your chosen ones, that I may share in the joy of your nation and join your inheritance in giving praise. |
We have sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly. | 6We have sinned, even as our ancestors did; we have done wrong and acted wickedly. |
Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies; but provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea. | 7When our ancestors were in Egypt, they gave no thought to your miracles; they did not remember your many kindnesses, and they rebelled by the sea, the Red Sea. |
Nevertheless he saved them for his name's sake, that he might make his mighty power to be known. | 8Yet he saved them for his name's sake, to make his mighty power known. |
He rebuked the Red sea also, and it was dried up: so he led them through the depths, as through the wilderness. | 9He rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried up; he led them through the depths as through a desert. |
And he saved them from the hand of him that hated them, and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy. | 10He saved them from the hand of the foe; from the hand of the enemy he redeemed them. |
And the waters covered their enemies: there was not one of them left. | 11The waters covered their adversaries; not one of them survived. |
Then believed they his words; they sang his praise. | 12Then they believed his promises and sang his praise. |
They soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel: | 13But they soon forgot what he had done and did not wait for his plan to unfold. |
But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert. | 14In the desert they gave in to their craving; in the wilderness they put God to the test. |
And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul. | 15So he gave them what they asked for, but sent a wasting disease among them. |
They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron the saint of the LORD. | 16In the camp they grew envious of Moses and of Aaron, who was consecrated to the LORD. |
The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram. | 17The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan; it buried the company of Abiram. |
And a fire was kindled in their company; the flame burned up the wicked. | 18Fire blazed among their followers; a flame consumed the wicked. |
They made a calf in Horeb, and worshipped the molten image. | 19At Horeb they made a calf and worshiped an idol cast from metal. |
Thus they changed their glory into the similitude of an ox that eateth grass. | 20They exchanged their glorious God for an image of a bull, which eats grass. |
They forgat God their saviour, which had done great things in Egypt; | 21They forgot the God who saved them, who had done great things in Egypt, |
Wondrous works in the land of Ham, and terrible things by the Red sea. | 22miracles in the land of Ham and awesome deeds by the Red Sea. |
Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them. | 23So he said he would destroy them-- had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him to keep his wrath from destroying them. |
Yea, they despised the pleasant land, they believed not his word: | 24Then they despised the pleasant land; they did not believe his promise. |
But murmured in their tents, and hearkened not unto the voice of the LORD. | 25They grumbled in their tents and did not obey the LORD. |
Therefore he lifted up his hand against them, to overthrow them in the wilderness: | 26So he swore to them with uplifted hand that he would make them fall in the wilderness, |
To overthrow their seed also among the nations, and to scatter them in the lands. | 27make their descendants fall among the nations and scatter them throughout the lands. |
They joined themselves also unto Baalpeor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead. | 28They yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods; |
Thus they provoked him to anger with their inventions: and the plague brake in upon them. | 29they aroused the LORD's anger by their wicked deeds, and a plague broke out among them. |
Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment: and so the plague was stayed. | 30But Phinehas stood up and intervened, and the plague was checked. |
And that was counted unto him for righteousness unto all generations for evermore. | 31This was credited to him as righteousness for endless generations to come. |
They angered him also at the waters of strife, so that it went ill with Moses for their sakes: | 32By the waters of Meribah they angered the LORD, and trouble came to Moses because of them; |
Because they provoked his spirit, so that he spake unadvisedly with his lips. | 33for they rebelled against the Spirit of God, and rash words came from Moses' lips. |
They did not destroy the nations, concerning whom the LORD commanded them: | 34They did not destroy the peoples as the LORD had commanded them, |
But were mingled among the heathen, and learned their works. | 35but they mingled with the nations and adopted their customs. |
And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them. | 36They worshiped their idols, which became a snare to them. |
Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils, | 37They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to false gods. |
And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood. | 38They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was desecrated by their blood. |
Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions. | 39They defiled themselves by what they did; by their deeds they prostituted themselves. |
Therefore was the wrath of the LORD kindled against his people, insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance. | 40Therefore the LORD was angry with his people and abhorred his inheritance. |
And he gave them into the hand of the heathen; and they that hated them ruled over them. | 41He gave them into the hands of the nations, and their foes ruled over them. |
Their enemies also oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their hand. | 42Their enemies oppressed them and subjected them to their power. |
Many times did he deliver them; but they provoked him with their counsel, and were brought low for their iniquity. | 43Many times he delivered them, but they were bent on rebellion and they wasted away in their sin. |
Nevertheless he regarded their affliction, when he heard their cry: | 44Yet he took note of their distress when he heard their cry; |
And he remembered for them his covenant, and repented according to the multitude of his mercies. | 45for their sake he remembered his covenant and out of his great love he relented. |
He made them also to be pitied of all those that carried them captives. | 46He caused all who held them captive to show them mercy. |
Save us, O LORD our God, and gather us from among the heathen, to give thanks unto thy holy name, and to triumph in thy praise. | 47Save us, LORD our God, and gather us from the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in your praise. |
Blessed be the LORD God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting: and let all the people say, Amen. Praise ye the LORD. | 48Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Let all the people say, "Amen!" Praise the LORD. |
