King James Bible | English Standard Version |
Praise ye the LORD. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. | 1Praise the LORD! Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! |
Who can utter the mighty acts of the LORD? who can shew forth all his praise? | 2Who can utter the mighty deeds of the LORD, or declare all his praise? |
Blessed are they that keep judgment, and he that doeth righteousness at all times. | 3Blessed are they who observe justice, who do righteousness at all times! |
Remember me, O LORD, with the favour that thou bearest unto thy people: O visit me with thy salvation; | 4Remember me, O LORD, when you show favor to your people; help me when you save them, |
That I may see the good of thy chosen, that I may rejoice in the gladness of thy nation, that I may glory with thine inheritance. | 5that I may look upon the prosperity of your chosen ones, that I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation, that I may glory with your inheritance. |
We have sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly. | 6Both we and our fathers have sinned; we have committed iniquity; we have done wickedness. |
Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies; but provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea. | 7Our fathers, when they were in Egypt, did not consider your wondrous works; they did not remember the abundance of your steadfast love, but rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea. |
Nevertheless he saved them for his name's sake, that he might make his mighty power to be known. | 8Yet he saved them for his name’s sake, that he might make known his mighty power. |
He rebuked the Red sea also, and it was dried up: so he led them through the depths, as through the wilderness. | 9He rebuked the Red Sea, and it became dry, and he led them through the deep as through a desert. |
And he saved them from the hand of him that hated them, and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy. | 10So he saved them from the hand of the foe and redeemed them from the power of the enemy. |
And the waters covered their enemies: there was not one of them left. | 11And the waters covered their adversaries; not one of them was left. |
Then believed they his words; they sang his praise. | 12Then they believed his words; they sang his praise. |
They soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel: | 13But they soon forgot his works; they did not wait for his counsel. |
But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert. | 14But they had a wanton craving in the wilderness, and put God to the test in the desert; |
And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul. | 15he gave them what they asked, but sent a wasting disease among them. |
They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron the saint of the LORD. | 16When men in the camp were jealous of Moses and Aaron, the holy one of the LORD, |
The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram. | 17the earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram. |
And a fire was kindled in their company; the flame burned up the wicked. | 18Fire also broke out in their company; the flame burned up the wicked. |
They made a calf in Horeb, and worshipped the molten image. | 19They made a calf in Horeb and worshiped a metal image. |
Thus they changed their glory into the similitude of an ox that eateth grass. | 20They exchanged the glory of God for the image of an ox that eats grass. |
They forgat God their saviour, which had done great things in Egypt; | 21They forgot God, their Savior, who had done great things in Egypt, |
Wondrous works in the land of Ham, and terrible things by the Red sea. | 22wondrous works in the land of Ham, and awesome deeds by the Red Sea. |
Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them. | 23Therefore he said he would destroy them— had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him, to turn away his wrath from destroying them. |
Yea, they despised the pleasant land, they believed not his word: | 24Then they despised the pleasant land, having no faith in his promise. |
But murmured in their tents, and hearkened not unto the voice of the LORD. | 25They murmured in their tents, and did not obey the voice of the LORD. |
Therefore he lifted up his hand against them, to overthrow them in the wilderness: | 26Therefore he raised his hand and swore to them that he would make them fall in the wilderness, |
To overthrow their seed also among the nations, and to scatter them in the lands. | 27and would make their offspring fall among the nations, scattering them among the lands. |
They joined themselves also unto Baalpeor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead. | 28Then they yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor, and ate sacrifices offered to the dead; |
Thus they provoked him to anger with their inventions: and the plague brake in upon them. | 29they provoked the LORD to anger with their deeds, and a plague broke out among them. |
Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment: and so the plague was stayed. | 30Then Phinehas stood up and intervened, and the plague was stayed. |
And that was counted unto him for righteousness unto all generations for evermore. | 31And that was counted to him as righteousness from generation to generation forever. |
They angered him also at the waters of strife, so that it went ill with Moses for their sakes: | 32They angered him at the waters of Meribah, and it went ill with Moses on their account, |
Because they provoked his spirit, so that he spake unadvisedly with his lips. | 33for they made his spirit bitter, and he spoke rashly with his lips. |
They did not destroy the nations, concerning whom the LORD commanded them: | 34They did not destroy the peoples, as the LORD commanded them, |
But were mingled among the heathen, and learned their works. | 35but they mixed with the nations and learned to do as they did. |
And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them. | 36They served their idols, which became a snare to them. |
Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils, | 37They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons; |
And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood. | 38they poured out innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was polluted with blood. |
Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions. | 39Thus they became unclean by their acts, and played the whore in their deeds. |
Therefore was the wrath of the LORD kindled against his people, insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance. | 40Then the anger of the LORD was kindled against his people, and he abhorred his heritage; |
And he gave them into the hand of the heathen; and they that hated them ruled over them. | 41he gave them into the hand of the nations, so that those who hated them ruled over them. |
Their enemies also oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their hand. | 42Their enemies oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their power. |
Many times did he deliver them; but they provoked him with their counsel, and were brought low for their iniquity. | 43Many times he delivered them, but they were rebellious in their purposes and were brought low through their iniquity. |
Nevertheless he regarded their affliction, when he heard their cry: | 44Nevertheless, he looked upon their distress, when he heard their cry. |
And he remembered for them his covenant, and repented according to the multitude of his mercies. | 45For their sake he remembered his covenant, and relented according to the abundance of his steadfast love. |
He made them also to be pitied of all those that carried them captives. | 46He caused them to be pitied by all those who held them captive. |
Save us, O LORD our God, and gather us from among the heathen, to give thanks unto thy holy name, and to triumph in thy praise. | 47Save us, O LORD our God, and gather us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in your praise. |
Blessed be the LORD God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting: and let all the people say, Amen. Praise ye the LORD. | 48Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting! And let all the people say, “Amen!” Praise the LORD! |
