1I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. | 1I ask, then, has God rejected His people? Absolutely not! For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin. |
2God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying, | 2God has not rejected His people whom He foreknew. Or don't you know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijah--how he pleads with God against Israel? |
3Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life. | 3Lord, they have killed Your prophets and torn down Your altars. I am the only one left, and they are trying to take my life! |
4But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal. | 4But what was God's reply to him? I have left 7,000 men for Myself who have not bowed down to Baal. |
5Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. | 5In the same way, then, there is also at the present time a remnant chosen by grace. |
6And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work. | 6Now if by grace, then it is not by works; otherwise grace ceases to be grace. |
7What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded | 7What then? Israel did not find what it was looking for, but the elect did find it. The rest were hardened, |
8(According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day. | 8as it is written: God gave them a spirit of insensitivity, eyes that cannot see and ears that cannot hear, to this day. |
9And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them: | 9And David says: Let their feasting become a snare and a trap, a pitfall and a retribution to them. |
10Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway. | 10Let their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent continually. |
11I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy. | 11I ask, then, have they stumbled in order to fall? Absolutely not! On the contrary, by their stumbling, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel jealous. |
12Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness? | 12Now if their stumbling brings riches for the world, and their failure riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full number bring! |
13For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office: | 13Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. In view of the fact that I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, |
14If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them. | 14if I can somehow make my own people jealous and save some of them. |
15For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead? | 15For if their rejection brings reconciliation to the world, what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead? |
16For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches. | 16Now if the firstfruits offered up are holy, so is the whole batch. And if the root is holy, so are the branches. |
17And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree; | 17Now if some of the branches were broken off, and you, though a wild olive branch, were grafted in among them and have come to share in the rich root of the cultivated olive tree, |
18Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. | 18do not brag that you are better than those branches. But if you do brag--you do not sustain the root, but the root sustains you. |
19Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in. | 19Then you will say, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in." |
20Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: | 20True enough; they were broken off by unbelief, but you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid. |
21For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. | 21For if God did not spare the natural branches, He will not spare you either. |
22Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. | 22Therefore, consider God's kindness and severity: severity toward those who have fallen but God's kindness toward you--if you remain in His kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off. |
23And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again. | 23And even they, if they do not remain in unbelief, will be grafted in, because God has the power to graft them in again. |
24For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree? | 24For if you were cut off from your native wild olive and against nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these--the natural branches--be grafted into their own olive tree? |
25For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. | 25So that you will not be conceited, brothers, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery: A partial hardening has come to Israel until the full number of the Gentiles has come in. |
26And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: | 26And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written: The Liberator will come from Zion; He will turn away godlessness from Jacob. |
27For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins. | 27And this will be My covenant with them when I take away their sins. |
28As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes. | 28Regarding the gospel, they are enemies for your advantage, but regarding election, they are loved because of the patriarchs, |
29For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. | 29since God's gracious gifts and calling are irrevocable. |
30For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief: | 30As you once disobeyed God, but now have received mercy through their disobedience, |
31Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy. | 31so they too have now disobeyed, resulting in mercy to you, so that they also now may receive mercy. |
32For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all. | 32For God has imprisoned all in disobedience, so that He may have mercy on all. |
33O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! | 33Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable His judgments and untraceable His ways! |
34For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counseller? | 34For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been His counselor? |
35Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? | 35Or who has ever first given to Him, and has to be repaid? |
36For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen. | 36For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen. |
