In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them, | 1In those days there was again a large crowd, and they had nothing to eat. He summoned the disciples and said to them, |
I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat: | 2"I have compassion on the crowd, because they've already stayed with Me three days and have nothing to eat. |
And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far. | 3If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, and some of them have come a long distance." |
And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness? | 4His disciples answered Him, "Where can anyone get enough bread here in this desolate place to fill these people?" |
And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven. | 5"How many loaves do you have?" He asked them." Seven," they said. |
And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people. | 6Then He commanded the crowd to sit down on the ground. Taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks, broke the loaves, and kept on giving them to His disciples to set before the people. So they served the loaves to the crowd. |
And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them. | 7They also had a few small fish, and when He had blessed them, He said these were to be served as well. |
So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets. | 8They ate and were filled. Then they collected seven large baskets of leftover pieces. |
And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away. | 9About 4,000 men were there. He dismissed them |
And straightway he entered into a ship with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha. | 10and immediately got into the boat with His disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha. |
And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, tempting him. | 11The Pharisees came out and began to argue with Him, demanding of Him a sign from heaven to test Him. |
And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation. | 12But sighing deeply in His spirit, He said, "Why does this generation demand a sign? I assure you: No sign will be given to this generation!" |
And he left them, and entering into the ship again departed to the other side. | 13Then He left them, got on board the boat again, and went to the other side. |
Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf. | 14They had forgotten to take bread and had only one loaf with them in the boat. |
And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod. | 15Then He commanded them: "Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod." |
And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread. | 16They were discussing among themselves that they did not have any bread. |
And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened? | 17Aware of this, He said to them, "Why are you discussing that you do not have any bread? Don't you understand or comprehend? Is your heart hardened? |
Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember? | 18Do you have eyes, and not see, and do you have ears, and not hear? And do you not remember? |
When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve. | 19When I broke the five loaves for the 5,000, how many baskets full of pieces of bread did you collect?"" Twelve," they told Him. |
And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven. | 20"When I broke the seven loaves for the 4,000, how many large baskets full of pieces of bread did you collect?"" Seven," they said. |
And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand? | 21And He said to them, "Don't you understand yet?" |
And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him. | 22Then they came to Bethsaida. They brought a blind man to Him and begged Him to touch him. |
And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought. | 23He took the blind man by the hand and brought him out of the village. Spitting on his eyes and laying His hands on him, He asked him, "Do you see anything?" |
And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking. | 24He looked up and said, "I see people--they look to me like trees walking." |
After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly. | 25Again Jesus placed His hands on the man's eyes, and he saw distinctly. He was cured and could see everything clearly. |
And he sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town. | 26Then He sent him home, saying, "Don't even go into the village." |
And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi: and by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am? | 27Jesus went out with His disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the road He asked His disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" |
And they answered, John the Baptist: but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets. | 28They answered Him, "John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, one of the prophets." |
And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ. | 29"But you," He asked them again, "who do you say that I am?" Peter answered Him, "You are the Messiah!" |
And he charged them that they should tell no man of him. | 30And He strictly warned them to tell no one about Him. |
And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. | 31Then He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, be killed, and rise after three days. |
And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. | 32He was openly talking about this. So Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. |
But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men. | 33But turning around and looking at His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind Me, Satan, because you're not thinking about God's concerns, but man's!" |
And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. | 34Summoning the crowd along with His disciples, He said to them, "If anyone wants to be My follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me. |
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. | 35For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me and the gospel will save it. |
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? | 36For what does it benefit a man to gain the whole world yet lose his life? |
Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? | 37What can a man give in exchange for his life? |
Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. | 38For whoever is ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels." |
