To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? | 1My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? |
O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent. | 2O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest. |
But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel. | 3Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. |
Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them. | 4In you our fathers trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them. |
They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded. | 5To you they cried and were rescued; in you they trusted and were not put to shame. |
But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. | 6But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. |
All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, | 7All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; |
He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him. | 8“He trusts in the LORD; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!” |
But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother's breasts. | 9Yet you are he who took me from the womb; you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts. |
I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly. | 10On you was I cast from my birth, and from my mother’s womb you have been my God. |
Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help. | 11Be not far from me, for trouble is near, and there is none to help. |
Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. | 12Many bulls encompass me; strong bulls of Bashan surround me; |
They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. | 13they open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion. |
I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. | 14I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast; |
My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. | 15my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death. |
For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. | 16For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet— |
I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. | 17I can count all my bones— they stare and gloat over me; |
They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. | 18they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. |
But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me. | 19But you, O LORD, do not be far off! O you my help, come quickly to my aid! |
Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog. | 20Deliver my soul from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dog! |
Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns. | 21Save me from the mouth of the lion! You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen! |
I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee. | 22I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you: |
Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel. | 23You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel! |
For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard. | 24For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him. |
My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him. | 25From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will perform before those who fear him. |
The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever. | 26The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the LORD! May your hearts live forever! |
All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. | 27All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you. |
For the kingdom is the LORD'S: and he is the governor among the nations. | 28For kingship belongs to the LORD, and he rules over the nations. |
All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul. | 29All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, even the one who could not keep himself alive. |
A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. | 30Posterity shall serve him; it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation; |
They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this. | 31they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn, that he has done it. |
