When they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage at the Mount of Olives, Jesus then sent two disciples, | 1When they had approached Jerusalem and had come to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, |
telling them, "Go into the village ahead of you. At once you will find a donkey tied there, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to Me. | 2saying to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied there and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to Me. |
If anyone says anything to you, you should say that the Lord needs them, and immediately he will send them." | 3"If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, 'The Lord has need of them,' and immediately he will send them." |
This took place so that what was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled: | 4This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: |
Tell Daughter Zion, "Look, your King is coming to you, gentle, and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden." | 5"SAY TO THE DAUGHTER OF ZION, 'BEHOLD YOUR KING IS COMING TO YOU, GENTLE, AND MOUNTED ON A DONKEY, EVEN ON A COLT, THE FOAL OF A BEAST OF BURDEN.'" |
The disciples went and did just as Jesus directed them. | 6The disciples went and did just as Jesus had instructed them, |
They brought the donkey and the colt; then they laid their robes on them, and He sat on them. | 7and brought the donkey and the colt, and laid their coats on them; and He sat on the coats. |
A very large crowd spread their robes on the road; others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them on the road. | 8Most of the crowd spread their coats in the road, and others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them in the road. |
Then the crowds who went ahead of Him and those who followed kept shouting: Hosanna to the Son of David! He who comes in the name of the Lord is the blessed One! Hosanna in the highest heaven! | 9The crowds going ahead of Him, and those who followed, were shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David; BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; Hosanna in the highest!" |
When He entered Jerusalem, the whole city was shaken, saying, "Who is this?" | 10When He had entered Jerusalem, all the city was stirred, saying, "Who is this?" |
And the crowds kept saying, "This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee!" | 11And the crowds were saying, "This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth in Galilee." |
Jesus went into the temple complex and drove out all those buying and selling in the temple. He overturned the money changers' tables and the chairs of those selling doves. | 12And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all those who were buying and selling in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves. |
And He said to them, "It is written, My house will be called a house of prayer. But you are making it a den of thieves!" | 13And He said to them, "It is written, 'MY HOUSE SHALL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF PRAYER'; but you are making it a ROBBERS' DEN." |
The blind and the lame came to Him in the temple complex, and He healed them. | 14And the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them. |
When the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonders that He did and the children shouting in the temple complex, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" they were indignant | 15But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that He had done, and the children who were shouting in the temple, "Hosanna to the Son of David," they became indignant |
and said to Him, "Do You hear what these children are saying?" "Yes," Jesus told them. "Have you never read: You have prepared praise from the mouths of children and nursing infants?" | 16and said to Him, "Do You hear what these children are saying?" And Jesus said to them, "Yes; have you never read, 'OUT OF THE MOUTH OF INFANTS AND NURSING BABIES YOU HAVE PREPARED PRAISE FOR YOURSELF'?" |
Then He left them, went out of the city to Bethany, and spent the night there. | 17And He left them and went out of the city to Bethany, and spent the night there. |
Early in the morning, as He was returning to the city, He was hungry. | 18Now in the morning, when He was returning to the city, He became hungry. |
Seeing a lone fig tree by the road, He went up to it and found nothing on it except leaves. And He said to it, "May no fruit ever come from you again!" At once the fig tree withered. | 19Seeing a lone fig tree by the road, He came to it and found nothing on it except leaves only; and He said to it, "No longer shall there ever be any fruit from you." And at once the fig tree withered. |
When the disciples saw it, they were amazed and said, "How did the fig tree wither so quickly?" | 20Seeing this, the disciples were amazed and asked, "How did the fig tree wither all at once?" |
Jesus answered them, "I assure you: If you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you tell this mountain, Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,' it will be done. | 21And Jesus answered and said to them, "Truly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, 'Be taken up and cast into the sea,' it will happen. |
And if you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer." | 22"And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive." |
When He entered the temple complex, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to Him as He was teaching and said, "By what authority are You doing these things? Who gave You this authority?" | 23When He entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to Him while He was teaching, and said, "By what authority are You doing these things, and who gave You this authority?" |
Jesus answered them, "I will also ask you one question, and if you answer it for Me, then I will tell you by what authority I do these things. | 24Jesus said to them, "I will also ask you one thing, which if you tell Me, I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. |
Where did John's baptism come from? From heaven or from men?" They began to argue among themselves, "If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say to us, 'Then why didn't you believe him?' | 25"The baptism of John was from what source, from heaven or from men?" And they began reasoning among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say to us, 'Then why did you not believe him?' |
But if we say, 'From men,' we're afraid of the crowd, because everyone thought John was a prophet." | 26"But if we say, 'From men,' we fear the people; for they all regard John as a prophet." |
So they answered Jesus, "We don't know." And He said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things. | 27And answering Jesus, they said, "We do not know." He also said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things. |
"But what do you think? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said, My son, go, work in the vineyard today.' | 28"But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first and said, 'Son, go work today in the vineyard.' |
"He answered, I don't want to!' Yet later he changed his mind and went. | 29"And he answered, 'I will not'; but afterward he regretted it and went. |
Then the man went to the other and said the same thing. "'I will, sir,' he answered. But he didn't go. | 30"The man came to the second and said the same thing; and he answered, 'I will, sir'; but he did not go. |
"Which of the two did his father's will?"" The first," they said. Jesus said to them, "I assure you: Tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you! | 31"Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and prostitutes will get into the kingdom of God before you. |
For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you didn't believe him. Tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him, but you, when you saw it, didn't even change your minds then and believe him. | 32"For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him; but the tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him; and you, seeing this, did not even feel remorse afterward so as to believe him. |
"Listen to another parable: There was a man, a landowner, who planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a winepress in it, and built a watchtower. He leased it to tenant farmers and went away. | 33"Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who PLANTED A VINEYARD AND PUT A WALL AROUND IT AND DUG A WINE PRESS IN IT, AND BUILT A TOWER, and rented it out to vine-growers and went on a journey. |
When the grape harvest drew near, he sent his slaves to the farmers to collect his fruit. | 34"When the harvest time approached, he sent his slaves to the vine-growers to receive his produce. |
But the farmers took his slaves, beat one, killed another, and stoned a third. | 35"The vine-growers took his slaves and beat one, and killed another, and stoned a third. |
Again, he sent other slaves, more than the first group, and they did the same to them. | 36"Again he sent another group of slaves larger than the first; and they did the same thing to them. |
Finally, he sent his son to them. They will respect my son,' he said. | 37"But afterward he sent his son to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.' |
"But when the tenant farmers saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir. Come, let's kill him and take his inheritance!' | 38"But when the vine-growers saw the son, they said among themselves, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him and seize his inheritance.' |
So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. | 39"They took him, and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. |
Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those farmers?"" | 40"Therefore when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vine-growers?" |
He will completely destroy those terrible men," they told Him, "and lease his vineyard to other farmers who will give him his produce at the harvest." | 41They said to Him, "He will bring those wretches to a wretched end, and will rent out the vineyard to other vine-growers who will pay him the proceeds at the proper seasons." |
Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This came from the Lord and is wonderful in our eyes? | 42Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures, 'THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone; THIS CAME ABOUT FROM THE LORD, AND IT IS MARVELOUS IN OUR EYES '? |
Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation producing its fruit. | 43"Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people, producing the fruit of it. |
Whoever falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whoever it falls, it will grind him to powder!" | 44"And he who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust." |
When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard His parables, they knew He was speaking about them. | 45When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard His parables, they understood that He was speaking about them. |
Although they were looking for a way to arrest Him, they feared the crowds, because they regarded Him as a prophet. | 46When they sought to seize Him, they feared the people, because they considered Him to be a prophet. |
