Holman Christian Standard Bible | International Standard Version |
For the choir director: according to "The Deer of the Dawn." A Davidic psalm. My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Why are You so far from my deliverance and from my words of groaning? | 1My God! My God! Why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far from delivering me— from my groaning words? |
My God, I cry by day, but You do not answer, by night, yet I have no rest. | 2My God, I cry out to you throughout the day, but you do not answer; and throughout the night, but I have no rest. |
But You are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. | 3You are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. |
Our fathers trusted in You; they trusted, and You rescued them. | 4Our ancestors trusted in you; they trusted and you delivered them. |
They cried to You and were set free; they trusted in You and were not disgraced. | 5They cried out to you and escaped; they trusted in you and were not put to shame. |
But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by people. | 6But as for me, I am only a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by people. |
Everyone who sees me mocks me; they sneer and shake their heads:" | 7Everyone who sees me mocks me; they gape at me with open mouths and shake their heads at me. |
He relies on the LORD; let Him rescue him; let the LORD deliver him, since He takes pleasure in him." | 8They say, "Commit yourself to the LORD; perhaps the LORD will deliver him, perhaps he will cause him to escape, since he delights in him." |
You took me from the womb, making me secure while at my mother's breast. | 9Yet, you are the one who took me from the womb, and kept me safe on my mother's breasts. |
I was given over to You at birth; You have been my God from my mother's womb. | 10I was dependent on you from birth; from my mother's womb you have been my God. |
Do not be far from me, because distress is near and there is no one to help. | 11Do not be so distant from me, for trouble is at hand; indeed, there is no deliverer. |
Many bulls surround me; strong ones of Bashan encircle me. | 12Many bulls have surrounded me; the vicious bulls of Bashan have encircled me. |
They open their mouths against me-- lions, mauling and roaring. | 13Their mouths are opened wide toward me, like roaring and attacking lions. |
I am poured out like water, and all my bones are disjointed; my heart is like wax, melting within me. | 14I am poured out like water; all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax, melting within me. |
My strength is dried up like baked clay; my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. You put me into the dust of death. | 15My strength is dried up like broken pottery; my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth, and you have brought me down to the dust of death. |
For dogs have surrounded me; a gang of evildoers has closed in on me; they pierced my hands and my feet. | 16For dogs have surrounded me; a gang of those who practice of evil has encircled me. They gouged my hands and my feet. |
I can count all my bones; people look and stare at me. | 17I can count all my bones. They look at me; they stare at me. |
They divided my garments among themselves, and they cast lots for my clothing. | 18They divide my clothing among themselves; they cast lots for my clothing! |
But You, LORD, don't be far away. My strength, come quickly to help me. | 19But as for you, LORD, do not be far away from me; My Strength, come quickly to help me. |
Deliver my life from the sword, my only life from the power of these dogs. | 20Deliver me from the sword; my precious life from the power of the dog. |
Save me from the mouth of the lion! You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen. | 21Deliver me from the mouth of the lion, from the horns of the wild oxen. You have answered me. |
I will proclaim Your name to my brothers; I will praise You in the congregation. | 22I will declare your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation, I will praise you, saying, |
You who fear Yahweh, praise Him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor Him! All you descendants of Israel, revere Him! | 23"All who fear the LORD, praise him! All the seed of Jacob, glorify him! All the seed of Israel, fear him! |
For He has not despised or detested the torment of the afflicted. He did not hide His face from him but listened when he cried to Him for help. | 24For he does not despise nor detest the afflicted person; he does not hide his face from him, but he hears him when he cries out to him." |
I will give praise in the great congregation because of You; I will fulfill my vows before those who fear You. | 25My praise in the great congregation is because of you; I will pay my vows before those who fear you. |
The humble will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the LORD will praise Him. May your hearts live forever! | 26The afflicted will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the LORD will praise him, "May you live forever!" |
All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD. All the families of the nations will bow down before You, | 27All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD; all the families of the nations will bow in submission to the LORD. |
for kingship belongs to the LORD; He rules over the nations. | 28Indeed, the kingdom belongs to the LORD; he rules over the nations. |
All who prosper on earth will eat and bow down; all those who go down to the dust will kneel before Him-- even the one who cannot preserve his life. | 29All the prosperous people will eat and bow down in submission. All those who are about to go down to the grave will bow down in submission, along with the one who can no longer keep himself alive. |
Their descendants will serve Him; the next generation will be told about the Lord. | 30Our descendants will serve him, and that generation will be told about the Lord. |
They will come and tell a people yet to be born about His righteousness-- what He has done. | 31They will come and declare his righteousness to a people yet to be born; indeed, he has accomplished it! |
