Lamentations 5
HCSB Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
Holman Christian Standard BibleEnglish Standard Version
Yahweh, remember what has happened to us. Look, and see our disgrace! 1Remember, O LORD, what has befallen us; look, and see our disgrace!
Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our houses to foreigners. 2Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our homes to foreigners.
We have become orphans, fatherless; our mothers are widows. 3We have become orphans, fatherless; our mothers are like widows.
We must pay for the water we drink; our wood comes at a price. 4We must pay for the water we drink; the wood we get must be bought.
We are closely pursued; we are tired, and no one offers us rest. 5Our pursuers are at our necks; we are weary; we are given no rest.
We made a treaty with Egypt and with Assyria, to get enough food. 6We have given the hand to Egypt, and to Assyria, to get bread enough.
Our fathers sinned; they no longer exist, but we bear their punishment. 7Our fathers sinned, and are no more; and we bear their iniquities.
Slaves rule over us; no one rescues us from their hands. 8Slaves rule over us; there is none to deliver us from their hand.
We secure our food at the risk of our lives because of the sword in the wilderness. 9We get our bread at the peril of our lives, because of the sword in the wilderness.
Our skin is as hot as an oven from the ravages of hunger. 10Our skin is hot as an oven with the burning heat of famine.
Women are raped in Zion, girls in the cities of Judah. 11Women are raped in Zion, young women in the towns of Judah.
Princes are hung up by their hands; elders are shown no respect. 12Princes are hung up by their hands; no respect is shown to the elders.
Young men labor at millstones; boys stumble under loads of wood. 13Young men are compelled to grind at the mill, and boys stagger under loads of wood.
The elders have left the city gate, the young men, their music. 14The old men have left the city gate, the young men their music.
Joy has left our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning. 15The joy of our hearts has ceased; our dancing has been turned to mourning.
The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned. 16The crown has fallen from our head; woe to us, for we have sinned!
Because of this, our heart is sick; because of these, our eyes grow dim: 17For this our heart has become sick, for these things our eyes have grown dim,
because of Mount Zion, which lies desolate and has jackals prowling in it. 18for Mount Zion which lies desolate; jackals prowl over it.
You, LORD, are enthroned forever; Your throne endures from generation to generation. 19But you, O LORD, reign forever; your throne endures to all generations.
Why have You forgotten us forever, abandoned us for our entire lives? 20Why do you forget us forever, why do you forsake us for so many days?
LORD, restore us to Yourself, so we may return; renew our days as in former times, 21Restore us to yourself, O LORD, that we may be restored! Renew our days as of old—
unless You have completely rejected us and are intensely angry with us. 22unless you have utterly rejected us, and you remain exceedingly angry with us.
