ESV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
English Standard VersionNew Living Translation
Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said,1Some Pharisees and teachers of religious law now arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus. They asked him,
“Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.”2“Why do your disciples disobey our age-old tradition? For they ignore our tradition of ceremonial hand washing before they eat.”
He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?3Jesus replied, “And why do you, by your traditions, violate the direct commandments of God?
For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’4 For instance, God says, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’
But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,”5 But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’
he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God.6 In this way, you say they don’t need to honor their parents. And so you cancel the word of God for the sake of your own tradition.
You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote,
“‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;8 ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”9 Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’ ”
And he called the people to him and said to them, “Hear and understand:10Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. “Listen,” he said, “and try to understand.
it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.”11 It’s not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth.”
Then the disciples came and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?”12Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you realize you offended the Pharisees by what you just said?”
He answered, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up.13Jesus replied, “Every plant not planted by my heavenly Father will be uprooted,
Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”14 so ignore them. They are blind guides leading the blind, and if one blind person guides another, they will both fall into a ditch.”
But Peter said to him, “Explain the parable to us.”15Then Peter said to Jesus, “Explain to us the parable that says people aren’t defiled by what they eat.”
And he said, “Are you also still without understanding?16 “Don’t you understand yet?” Jesus asked.
Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled?17 “Anything you eat passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer.
But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.18 But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you.
For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander.
These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.”20 These are what defile you. Eating with unwashed hands will never defile you.” The Faith of a Gentile Woman
And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon.21Then Jesus left Galilee and went north to the region of Tyre and Sidon.
And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.”22A Gentile woman who lived there came to him, pleading, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! For my daughter is possessed by a demon that torments her severely.”
But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.”23But Jesus gave her no reply, not even a word. Then his disciples urged him to send her away. “Tell her to go away,” they said. “She is bothering us with all her begging.”
He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”24Then Jesus said to the woman, “I was sent only to help God’s lost sheep—the people of Israel.”
But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.”25But she came and worshiped him, pleading again, “Lord, help me!”
And he answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”26Jesus responded, “It isn’t right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.”
She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.”27She replied, “That’s true, Lord, but even dogs are allowed to eat the scraps that fall beneath their masters’ table.”
Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly.28 “Dear woman,” Jesus said to her, “your faith is great. Your request is granted.” And her daughter was instantly healed. Jesus Heals Many People
Jesus went on from there and walked beside the Sea of Galilee. And he went up on the mountain and sat down there.29Jesus returned to the Sea of Galilee and climbed a hill and sat down.
And great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them,30A vast crowd brought to him people who were lame, blind, crippled, those who couldn’t speak, and many others. They laid them before Jesus, and he healed them all.
so that the crowd wondered, when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel.31The crowd was amazed! Those who hadn’t been able to speak were talking, the crippled were made well, the lame were walking, and the blind could see again! And they praised the God of Israel. Jesus Feeds Four Thousand
Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.”32Then Jesus called his disciples and told them, “I feel sorry for these people. They have been here with me for three days, and they have nothing left to eat. I don’t want to send them away hungry, or they will faint along the way.”
And the disciples said to him, “Where are we to get enough bread in such a desolate place to feed so great a crowd?”33The disciples replied, “Where would we get enough food here in the wilderness for such a huge crowd?”
And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven, and a few small fish.”34Jesus asked, “How much bread do you have?” They replied, “Seven loaves, and a few small fish.”
And directing the crowd to sit down on the ground,35So Jesus told all the people to sit down on the ground.
he took the seven loaves and the fish, and having given thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.36Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, thanked God for them, and broke them into pieces. He gave them to the disciples, who distributed the food to the crowd.
And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces left over.37They all ate as much as they wanted. Afterward, the disciples picked up seven large baskets of leftover food.
Those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.38There were 4,000 men who were fed that day, in addition to all the women and children.
And after sending away the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.39Then Jesus sent the people home, and he got into a boat and crossed over to the region of Magadan.
