Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, | 1When they came near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples on ahead and |
saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. | 2told them, "Go into the village ahead of you. At once you will find a donkey tied up and a colt with it. Untie them, and bring them to me. |
If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” | 3If anyone says anything to you, tell him, 'The Lord needs them,' and that person will send them at once." |
This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, | 4Now this happened to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet when he said, |
“Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’” | 5"Tell the daughter of Zion, 'Look, your king is coming to you! He is humble and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt of a donkey.'" |
The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. | 6So the disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. |
They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. | 7They brought the donkey and the colt and put their coats on them, and he sat upon them. |
Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. | 8Many people in the crowd spread their own coats on the road, while others began cutting down branches from the trees and spreading them on the road. |
And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” | 9Both the crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed him kept shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David! How blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!" |
And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” | 10When he came into Jerusalem, the whole city was trembling with excitement. The people were asking, "Who is this?" |
And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.” | 11The crowds kept saying, "This is the prophet Jesus, the man from Nazareth in Galilee." |
And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. | 12Then Jesus went into the Temple, threw out everyone who was selling and buying in the Temple, and overturned the moneychangers' tables and the chairs of those who sold doves. |
He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.” | 13He told them, "It is written, 'My house is to be called a house of prayer,' but you are turning it into a hideout for bandits!" |
And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them. | 14Blind and lame people came to him in the Temple, and he healed them. |
But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant, | 15But when the high priests and the scribes saw the amazing things that he had done and the children shouting in the Temple, "Hosanna to the Son of David," they became furious |
and they said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read, “‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise’?” | 16and asked him, "Do you hear what these people are saying?" Jesus told them, "Yes! Haven't you ever read, 'From the mouths of infants and nursing babies you have created praise'?" |
And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany and lodged there. | 17Then he left them and went out of the city to Bethany and spent the night there. |
In the morning, as he was returning to the city, he became hungry. | 18In the morning, as Jesus was returning to the city, he became hungry. |
And seeing a fig tree by the wayside, he went to it and found nothing on it but only leaves. And he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again!” And the fig tree withered at once. | 19Seeing a fig tree by the roadside, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. He told it, "May fruit never come from you again!" And immediately the fig tree dried up. |
When the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, “How did the fig tree wither at once?” | 20When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. "How did the fig tree dry up so quickly?" they asked. |
And Jesus answered them, “Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen. | 21Jesus answered them, "I tell all of you with certainty, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only will you be able to do what has been done to the fig tree, but you will also say to this mountain, 'Be removed and thrown into the sea,' and it will happen. |
And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.” | 22You will receive whatever you ask for in prayer, if you believe." |
And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” | 23Then Jesus went into the Temple. While he was teaching, the high priests and the elders of the people came to him and asked, "By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?" |
Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. | 24Jesus answered them, "I, too, will ask you one question. If you answer it for me, I will also tell you by what authority I am doing these things. |
The baptism of John, from where did it come? From heaven or from man?” And they discussed it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ | 25Where did John's authority to baptize come from? From heaven or from humans?" They began discussing this among themselves: "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask us, 'Then why didn't you believe him?' |
But if we say, ‘From man,’ we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was a prophet.” | 26But if we say, 'From humans,' we are afraid of the crowd, because everyone regards John as a prophet." |
So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things. | 27So they told Jesus, "We don't know." He in turn told them, "Then I won't tell you by what authority I am doing these things." |
“What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ | 28"But what do you think? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work in the vineyard today.' |
And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind and went. | 29His son replied, 'I don't want to,' but later he changed his mind and went. |
And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go. | 30Then the father went to the other son and told him the same thing. He replied, 'I will, sir,' but he didn't go. |
Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you. | 31Which of the two did the father's will?" They answered, "The first one." Jesus told them, "I tell all of you with certainty, tax collectors and prostitutes will get into God's kingdom ahead of you! |
For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him. | 32John came to you living a righteous life, and you didn't believe him, but the tax collectors and prostitutes did. But even when you saw that, you didn't change your minds at last and believe him." |
“Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and leased it to tenants, and went into another country. | 33"Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a wall around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and went abroad. |
When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to get his fruit. | 34When harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the tenant farmers to collect his produce. |
And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. | 35But the farmers took his servants and beat one, killed another, and attacked another with stones. |
Again he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them. | 36Again, he sent other servants to them, a greater number than the first, but the tenant farmers treated them the same way. |
Finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ | 37Finally, he sent his son to them, thinking, 'They will respect my son.' |
But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.’ | 38But when the tenant farmers saw his son, they told one another, 'This is the heir. Come on, let's kill him and get his inheritance!' |
And they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. | 39So they grabbed him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. |
When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” | 40Now when the owner of the vineyard returns, what will he do to those farmers?" |
They said to him, “He will put those wretches to a miserable death and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons.” | 41They told him, "He will put those horrible men to a horrible death. Then he will lease the vineyard to other farmers who will give him his produce at harvest time." |
Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: “‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’? | 42Jesus asked them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures, 'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This was the Lord's doing, and it is amazing in our eyes.'? |
Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits. | 43That is why I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce fruit for it. |
And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.” | 44The person who falls over this stone will be broken to pieces, but it will crush anyone on whom it falls." |
When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them. | 45When the high priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they knew that he was talking about them. |
And although they were seeking to arrest him, they feared the crowds, because they held him to be a prophet. | 46Although they wanted to arrest him, they were afraid of the crowds, who considered Jesus to be a prophet. |
