"Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they don't wash their hands when they eat." | 2"Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don't wash their hands when they eat." |
He answered them, "Why do you break God's commandment because of your tradition? | 3He answered them, "And why do you disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition? |
For God said: Honor your father and your mother; and, Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death. | 4For God said, 'Honor your father and mother' and 'Whoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.' |
But you say, 'Whoever tells his father or mother, "Whatever benefit you might have received from me is a gift committed to the temple," | 5But you say, 'If someone tells his father or mother, "Whatever help you would have received from me is given to God," |
he does not have to honor his father.' In this way, you have nullified the word of God because of your tradition. | 6he does not need to honor his father.' You have nullified the word of God on account of your tradition. |
Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said: | 7Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said, |
This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. | 8This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me, |
They worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines human commands." | 9and they worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'" |
Summoning the crowd, he told them, "Listen and understand: | 10Then he called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and understand. |
It's not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth--this defiles a person." | 11What defiles a person is not what goes into the mouth; it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles a person." |
Then the disciples came up and told him, "Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?" | 12Then the disciples came to him and said, "Do you know that when the Pharisees heard this saying they were offended?" |
He replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father didn't plant will be uprooted. | 13And he replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant will be uprooted. |
Leave them alone! They are blind guides. And if the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit." | 14Leave them! They are blind guides. If someone who is blind leads another who is blind, both will fall into a pit." |
Then Peter said, "Explain this parable to us." | 15But Peter said to him, "Explain this parable to us." |
"Do you still lack understanding?" he asked. | 16Jesus said, "Even after all this, are you still so foolish? |
"Don't you realize that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is eliminated? | 17Don't you understand that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach and then passes out into the sewer? |
But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this defiles a person. | 18But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a person. |
For from the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, slander. | 19For out of the heart come evil ideas, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. |
These are the things that defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile a person." | 20These are the things that defile a person; it is not eating with unwashed hands that defiles a person." |
When Jesus left there, he withdrew to the area of Tyre and Sidon. | 21After going out from there, Jesus went to the region of Tyre and Sidon. |
Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came and kept crying out, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely tormented by a demon." | 22A Canaanite woman from that area came and cried out, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is horribly demon-possessed!" |
Jesus did not say a word to her. His disciples approached him and urged him, "Send her away because she's crying out after us." | 23But he did not answer her a word. Then his disciples came and begged him, "Send her away, because she keeps on crying out after us." |
He replied, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." | 24So he answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." |
But she came, knelt before him, and said, "Lord, help me!" | 25But she came and bowed down before him and said, "Lord, help me!" |
He answered, "It isn't right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." | 26"It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs," he said. |
"Yes, Lord," she said, "yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." | 27"Yes, Lord," she replied, "but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." |
Then Jesus replied to her, "Woman, your faith is great. Let it be done for you as you want." And from that moment her daughter was healed. | 28Then Jesus answered her, "Woman, your faith is great! Let what you want be done for you." And her daughter was healed from that hour. |
Moving on from there, Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee. He went up on a mountain and sat there, | 29When he left there, Jesus went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up a mountain, where he sat down. |
and large crowds came to him, including the lame, the blind, the crippled, those unable to speak, and many others. They put them at his feet, and he healed them. | 30Then large crowds came to him bringing with them the lame, blind, crippled, mute, and many others. They laid them at his feet, and he healed them. |
So the crowd was amazed when they saw those unable to speak talking, the crippled restored, the lame walking, and the blind seeing, and they gave glory to the God of Israel. | 31As a result, the crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing, and they praised the God of Israel. |
Jesus called his disciples and said, "I have compassion on the crowd, because they've already stayed with me three days and have nothing to eat. I don't want to send them away hungry, otherwise they might collapse on the way." | 32Then Jesus called the disciples and said, "I have compassion on the crowd, because they have already been here with me three days and they have nothing to eat. I don't want to send them away hungry since they may faint on the way." |
The disciples said to him, "Where could we get enough bread in this desolate place to feed such a crowd?" | 33The disciples said to him, "Where can we get enough bread in this desolate place to satisfy so great a crowd?" |
"How many loaves do you have?" Jesus asked them. "Seven," they said, "and a few small fish." | 34Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?" They replied, "Seven--and a few small fish." |
After commanding the crowd to sit down on the ground, | 35After instructing the crowd to sit down on the ground, |
he took the seven loaves and the fish, gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. | 36he took the seven loaves and the fish, and after giving thanks, he broke them and began giving them to the disciples, who then gave them to the crowds. |
They all ate and were satisfied. They collected the leftover pieces--seven large baskets full. | 37They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full. |
Now there were four thousand men who had eaten, besides women and children. | 38Not counting children and women, there were four thousand men who ate. |
After dismissing the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan. | 39After sending away the crowd, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan. |
