LORD, remember what has happened to us. Look, and see our disgrace! | 1Remember, O LORD, what has befallen us; Look, and see our reproach! |
Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our houses to foreigners. | 2Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, Our houses to aliens. |
We have become orphans, fatherless; our mothers are widows. | 3We have become orphans without a father, Our mothers are like widows. |
We must pay for the water we drink; our wood comes at a price. | 4We have to pay for our drinking water, Our wood comes to us at a price. |
We are closely pursued; we are tired, and no one offers us rest. | 5Our pursuers are at our necks; We are worn out, there is no rest for us. |
We made a treaty with Egypt and with Assyria, to get enough food. | 6We have submitted to Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread. |
Our fathers sinned; they no longer exist, but we bear their punishment. | 7Our fathers sinned, and are no more; It is we who have borne their iniquities. |
Slaves rule over us; no one rescues us from them. | 8Slaves rule over us; There is no one to deliver us from their hand. |
We secure our food at the risk of our lives because of the sword in the wilderness. | 9We get our bread at the risk of our lives Because of the sword in the wilderness. |
Our skin is as hot as an oven from the ravages of hunger. | 10Our skin has become as hot as an oven, Because of the burning heat of famine. |
Women have been raped in Zion, virgins in the cities of Judah. | 11They ravished the women in Zion, The virgins in the cities of Judah. |
Princes have been hung up by their hands; elders are shown no respect. | 12Princes were hung by their hands; Elders were not respected. |
Young men labor at millstones; boys stumble under loads of wood. | 13Young men worked at the grinding mill, And youths stumbled under loads of wood. |
The elders have left the city gate, the young men, their music. | 14Elders are gone from the gate, Young men from their music. |
Joy has left our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning. | 15The joy of our hearts has ceased; Our dancing has been turned into mourning. |
The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned. | 16The crown has fallen from our head; Woe to us, for we have sinned! |
Because of this, our heart is sick; because of these, our eyes grow dim: | 17Because of this our heart is faint, Because of these things our eyes are dim; |
because of Mount Zion, which lies desolate and has jackals prowling in it. | 18Because of Mount Zion which lies desolate, Foxes prowl in it. |
You, LORD, are enthroned forever; your throne endures from generation to generation. | 19You, O LORD, rule forever; Your throne is from generation to generation. |
Why do you continually forget us, abandon us for our entire lives? | 20Why do You forget us forever? Why do You forsake us so long? |
LORD, bring us back to yourself, so we may return; renew our days as in former times, | 21Restore us to You, O LORD, that we may be restored; Renew our days as of old, |
unless you have completely rejected us and are intensely angry with us. | 22Unless You have utterly rejected us And are exceedingly angry with us. |
