For before he was taken away, he was approved as one who pleased God. | 5By faith Enoch was taken away without experiencing death. He could not be found, because God had taken him away. For before he was taken, he won approval as one who pleased God. |
Now without faith it is impossible to please God, since the one who draws near to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. | 6Now without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who diligently search for him. |

By faith even Sarah herself, when she was unable to have children, received power to conceive offspring, even though she was past the age, since she considered that the one who had promised was faithful. | 11By faith Sarah, even though she was old and barren, received the strength to conceive, because she was convinced that the one who had made the promise was faithful. |
Therefore, from one man--in fact, from one as good as dead--came offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky and as innumerable as the grains of sand along the seashore. | 12Abraham was as good as dead, yet from this one man came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore. |
These all died in faith, although they had not received the things that were promised. But they saw them from a distance, greeted them, and confessed that they were foreigners and temporary residents on the earth. | 13All these people died having faith. They did not receive the things that were promised, yet they saw them in the distant future and welcomed them, acknowledging that they were strangers and foreigners on earth. |
Now those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. | 14For people who say such things make it clear that they are looking for a country of their own. |
If they were thinking about where they came from, they would have had an opportunity to return. | 15If they had been thinking about what they had left behind, they would have had an opportunity to go back. |
But they now desire a better place--a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. | 16Instead, they were longing for a better country, that is, a heavenly one. That is why God is not ashamed to be called their God, because he has prepared a city for them. |
By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac. He received the promises and yet he was offering his one and only son, | 17By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered Isaac—he who had received the promises was about to offer his unique son in sacrifice, |
the one to whom it had been said, Your offspring will be called through Isaac. | 18about whom it had been said, "It is through Isaac that descendants will be named for you." |

For he considered reproach for the sake of Christ to be greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, since he was looking ahead to the reward. | 26He thought that being insulted for the sake of the Messiah was of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. |
By faith he left Egypt behind, not being afraid of the king's anger, for Moses persevered as one who sees him who is invisible. | 27By faith he left Egypt, without being afraid of the king's anger, and he persevered because he saw the one who is invisible. |
