Jesus went on from there and came to His hometown, accompanied by His disciples.1Jesus went out from there and came into His hometown; and His disciples followed Him.
When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard Him were astonished. “Where did this man get these ideas?” they asked. “What is this wisdom He has been given? And how can He perform such miracles?2When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue; and the many listeners were astonished, saying, "Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom given to Him, and such miracles as these performed by His hands?
Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? Aren’t His sisters here with us as well?” And they took offense at Him.3"Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?" And they took offense at Him.
Then Jesus said to them, “Only in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his own household is a prophet without honor.”4Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household."
So He could not perform any miracles there, except to lay His hands on a few of the sick and heal them.5And He could do no miracle there except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.
And He was amazed at their unbelief. And He went around from village to village, teaching the people.6And He wondered at their unbelief. And He was going around the villages teaching.
Then Jesus called the Twelve to Him and began to send them out two by two, giving them authority over unclean spirits.7And He summoned the twelve and began to send them out in pairs, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits;
He instructed them to take nothing but a staff for the journey—no bread, no bag, no money in their belts—8and He instructed them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a mere staff-- no bread, no bag, no money in their belt--
and to wear sandals, but not a second tunic.9but to wear sandals; and He added, "Do not put on two tunics."
And He told them, “When you enter a house, stay there until you leave that area.10And He said to them, "Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave town.
If anyone will not welcome you or listen to you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that place, as a testimony against them.”11"Any place that does not receive you or listen to you, as you go out from there, shake the dust off the soles of your feet for a testimony against them."
So they set out and preached that the people should repent.12They went out and preached that men should repent.
They also drove out many demons and healed many of the sick, anointing them with oil.13And they were casting out many demons and were anointing with oil many sick people and healing them.
Now King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known, and people were saying, “John the Baptist has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”14And King Herod heard of it, for His name had become well known; and people were saying, "John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are at work in Him."
Others were saying, “He is Elijah,” and still others, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.”15But others were saying, "He is Elijah." And others were saying, "He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old."
But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has risen from the dead!”16But when Herod heard of it, he kept saying, "John, whom I beheaded, has risen!"
For Herod himself had ordered that John be arrested and bound and imprisoned, on account of his brother Philip’s wife Herodias, whom Herod had married.17For Herod himself had sent and had John arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he had married her.
For John had been telling Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife!”18For John had been saying to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."
So Herodias held a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she had been unable,19Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death and could not do so;
because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man. When he heard John’s words, he was greatly perplexed; yet he listened to him gladly.20for Herod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was very perplexed; but he used to enjoy listening to him.
On Herod’s birthday, her opportunity arose. Herod held a banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.21A strategic day came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his lords and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee;
When the daughter of Herodias came and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests, and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.”22and when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests; and the king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you."
And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give you, up to half my kingdom!”23And he swore to her, "Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you; up to half of my kingdom."
Then she went out and asked her mother, “What should I request?” And her mother answered, “The head of John the Baptist.”24And she went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" And she said, "The head of John the Baptist."
At once the girl hurried back to the king with her request: “I want you to give me the head of John the Baptist on a platter immediately.”25Immediately she came in a hurry to the king and asked, saying, "I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter."
The king was consumed with sorrow, but because of his oaths and his guests, he did not want to refuse her.26And although the king was very sorry, yet because of his oaths and because of his dinner guests, he was unwilling to refuse her.
So without delay, the king commanded that John’s head be brought in. He sent an executioner, who went and beheaded him in the prison.27Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded him to bring back his head. And he went and had him beheaded in the prison,
The man brought John’s head on a platter and presented it to the girl, who gave it to her mother.28and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother.
When John’s disciples heard about this, they came and took his body and placed it in a tomb.29When his disciples heard about this, they came and took away his body and laid it in a tomb.
Meanwhile, the apostles gathered around Jesus and brought Him news of all they had done and taught.30The apostles gathered together with Jesus; and they reported to Him all that they had done and taught.
And He said to them, “Come with Me privately to a solitary place, and let us rest for a while.” For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.31And He said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a while." (For there were many people coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.)
So they went away in a boat by themselves to a solitary place.32They went away in the boat to a secluded place by themselves.
But many people saw them leaving and recognized them. They ran together on foot from all the towns and arrived before them.33The people saw them going, and many recognized them and ran there together on foot from all the cities, and got there ahead of them.
When Jesus stepped ashore and saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And He began to teach them many things.34When Jesus went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and He felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things.
By now the hour was already late. So the disciples came to Jesus and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is already late.35When it was already quite late, His disciples came to Him and said, "This place is desolate and it is already quite late;
Dismiss the crowd so they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”36send them away so that they may go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat."
But Jesus told them, “You give them something to eat.” They asked Him, “Should we go out and spend two hundred denarii to give all of them bread to eat?”37But He answered them, "You give them something to eat!" And they said to Him, "Shall we go and spend two hundred denarii on bread and give them something to eat?"
“Go and see how many loaves you have,” He told them. And after checking, they said, “Five—and two fish.”38And He said to them, "How many loaves do you have? Go look!" And when they found out, they said, "Five, and two fish."
Then Jesus directed them to have the people sit in groups on the green grass.39And He commanded them all to sit down by groups on the green grass.
So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties.40They sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties.
Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, Jesus spoke a blessing and broke the loaves. Then He gave them to His disciples to set before the people. And He divided the two fish among them all.41And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food and broke the loaves and He kept giving them to the disciples to set before them; and He divided up the two fish among them all.
They all ate and were satisfied,42They all ate and were satisfied,
and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.43and they picked up twelve full baskets of the broken pieces, and also of the fish.
And there were five thousand men who had eaten the loaves.44There were five thousand men who ate the loaves.
Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of Him to Bethsaida, while He dismissed the crowd.45Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to Bethsaida, while He Himself was sending the crowd away.
After bidding them farewell, He went up on the mountain to pray.46After bidding them farewell, He left for the mountain to pray.
When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and Jesus was alone on land.47When it was evening, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land.
He could see that the disciples were straining to row, because the wind was against them. About the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went out to them, walking on the sea. He intended to pass by them,48Seeing them straining at the oars, for the wind was against them, at about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea; and He intended to pass by them.
but when they saw Him walking on the sea, they cried out, thinking He was a ghost—49But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out;
for they all saw Him and were terrified. But Jesus spoke up at once: “Take courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.”50for they all saw Him and were terrified. But immediately He spoke with them and said to them, "Take courage; it is I, do not be afraid."
Then He climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. And the disciples were utterly astounded,51Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped; and they were utterly astonished,
for they had not understood about the loaves, but their hearts had been hardened.52for they had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves, but their heart was hardened.
When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and moored the boat.53When they had crossed over they came to land at Gennesaret, and moored to the shore.
As soon as they got out of the boat, the people recognized Jesus54When they got out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him,
and ran through that whole region, carrying the sick on mats to wherever they heard He was.55and ran about that whole country and began to carry here and there on their pallets those who were sick, to the place they heard He was.
And wherever He went—villages and towns and countrysides—they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged Him just to let them touch the fringe of His cloak. And all who touched Him were healed.56Wherever He entered villages, or cities, or countryside, they were laying the sick in the market places, and imploring Him that they might just touch the fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were being cured.
