The Parable of the Workers

1For the kingdom of the Messiah is like a family, the master whereof went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard. 2having agreed with them for a penny a day, he sent them to his vineyard. 3he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the market-place, and said to them, 4go ye likewise to my vineyard, and I will give you what is reasonable: accordingly they went thither. 5about the sixth and ninth hour he went out again, and gave the like directions. 6at last, about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and said to them, why do you stand idling thus all day long? 7they answer'd him, because we are not hired; go work then, said he, in my vineyard, and I will give you what's reasonable.

8so when even was come, the master of the vineyard said to his steward, call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last to the first. 9they then that were hired about the eleventh hour, came and received every man his penny. 10last of all they came who were hired first, expecting to have received more, but they had only a penny a man, 11who upon the receipt of it fell a murmuring against the master, and cry'd, 12these last have work'd but an hour, and you put them upon the level with us, who have born the whole fatigue and heat of the day. 13but he answered one of them, friend, I do thee no wrong: did not you agree for a penny a day? 14take your due, and be gone: I will give the last the same I give you. 15can't I do what I will with my own? because I am bountiful, are you invidious? 16thus the last shall be first, and the first last: for though many are invited, few have precedence.

The Third Prediction of the Passion
(Mark 10:32–34; Luke 18:31–34)

17As Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples in private, and said to them,

18we are now going to Jerusalem, where the son of man will be betrayed to the chief priests, and to the Scribes, who will condemn him to die, 19and deliver him up to the Gentiles, to be insulted, scourged, and crucified: but the third day he shall rise again.

A Mother’s Request
(Mark 10:35–45)

20Then the mother of Zebedee's children, with her two sons, came and threw herself at his feet, desiring a favour of him. 21and he said to her, what would you have? grant, said she, when you are upon the throne, that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left. 22but Jesus answered them, ye know not what ye ask, can ye bear to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? they said to him, we can. 23he replied, ye shall indeed drink of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, I cannot grant to any but those whom my father has destin'd thereto.

24upon hearing this, the other ten disciples were moved with indignation against the two brothers. 25but Jesus calling them to him, said, ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise arbitrary dominion over them, and they that are great exercise their authority. 26but it must not be so among you: on the contrary, whoever would rise among you, let him be your minister. 27and whoever would be chief among you, let him be your servant. 28as the son of man came not to be ministred unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for all.

The Blind Men by the Road
(Mark 10:46–52; Luke 18:35–43)

29At their departure from Jericho, a great multitude followed him. 30and there were two blind men sitting by the way-side, who hearing that Jesus was passing by, cried out, "have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David." 31and the people reprimanded them, to make them hold their tongue: but they bawl'd out the more, have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David. 32then Jesus stood still, and calling them, said, what would ye have me do for you? 33they said to him, grant Lord that we may have sight. 34Jesus then having compassion on them, touched their eyes: and immediately they had their sight, and they followed him.
