They sailed
This phrase indicates the mode of transportation used by Jesus and His disciples, emphasizing the common practice of traveling by boat across the Sea of Galilee. The Greek word used here, "πλέω" (pleō), suggests a purposeful journey, highlighting the intentionality of Jesus' ministry. Sailing was a significant means of travel in the ancient world, often fraught with danger, yet it underscores the commitment of Jesus and His disciples to reach those in need, regardless of the obstacles.

to the region of the Gerasenes
The "region of the Gerasenes" refers to a predominantly Gentile area on the eastern side of the Sea of Galilee. The name "Gerasenes" is derived from the city of Gerasa, one of the cities of the Decapolis, a group of ten cities with a strong Hellenistic influence. This setting is significant as it marks Jesus' outreach beyond the Jewish population, symbolizing the universal scope of His mission. The presence of Gentiles in this narrative foreshadows the later expansion of the Gospel to all nations.

across the lake
The "lake" mentioned here is the Sea of Galilee, a freshwater lake in Israel. The Greek term "λίμνη" (limnē) is used, which can refer to a lake or a large body of water. The Sea of Galilee is central to many Gospel narratives, serving as a backdrop for Jesus' teachings and miracles. Its geographical position as a boundary between Jewish and Gentile territories underscores the crossing as a metaphor for breaking down barriers and reaching out to diverse communities.

from Galilee
Galilee is the region in northern Israel where Jesus spent much of His ministry. Known for its fertile land and diverse population, Galilee was a melting pot of cultures and ideas. The mention of Galilee here serves as a reminder of Jesus' roots and the starting point of His public ministry. It highlights the transition from a familiar Jewish setting to a Gentile one, illustrating the expanding reach of Jesus' message. Galilee's historical and cultural context enriches the narrative, emphasizing the transformative power of the Gospel across different regions and peoples.

(26-39) And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes.--See Notes on Matthew 8:28-34, and Mark 5:1-20. Here again St. Mark and St. Luke agree in their order, and differ from St. Matthew. The better MSS. give "Gerasenes" or "Gergesenes." See Note on Matthew 8:28 for the localities.

Which is over against Galilee.--St. Luke's description of the region, which the other two Gospels name without describing, is characteristic of a foreigner writing for foreigners.

Verses 26-39. - The evil spirit in the Gergesene demoniac is dismissed into the herd of swine. Verse 26. - And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes. There is a perplexing difference in the reading of the older manuscripts here, but it is simply a question of the precise name of the locality where the great miracle was worked. In the three narratives of Matthew, Mark, and Luke the older manuscripts vary between "Gergesenes," "Gerasenes," and" Gadarenes." Gatiara was a city of some importance, about three hours' journey distant from the southern end of the Lake of Gennesaret. Its ruins are well known, and are distinguished by the remains of two amphitheatres. Gerasa was also a place of mark, and was situate about fifty miles from the lake. These cities might in the days of our Lord have either given its name to a great district stretching to the borders of the lake. Gergesa was a small and very obscure town nearly opposite Capernaum. There are some ruins now on this spot still known by the very slight corruption of Kerzha. There is scarcely any doubt that the scene of the miracle on the poor demoniac, and of the subsequent possession of the swine, must be looked for on this spot. But it was an obscure, little-known spot, and in very early days the preachers who told the story of the great miracle may have often spoken of the country as the district of the well-known Gerasa or Gadara, rather than of the unknown village of Gergesa. Hence probably the variations in the name in the older manuscripts here.
