1Listen, my sons, to the instruction of a father; pay attention and gain understanding. 1שִׁמְע֣וּ בָ֭נִים מ֣וּסַר אָ֑ב וְ֝הַקְשִׁ֗יבוּ לָדַ֥עַת בִּינָֽה׃
2For I give you sound teaching; do not abandon my instruction. 2כִּ֤י לֶ֣קַח ט֭וֹב נָתַ֣תִּי לָכֶ֑ם תּֽ֝וֹרָתִ֗י אַֽל־ תַּעֲזֹֽבוּ׃
3When I was a son to my father, tender and the only child of my mother, 3כִּי־ בֵ֭ן הָיִ֣יתִי לְאָבִ֑י רַ֥ךְ וְ֝יָחִ֗יד לִפְנֵ֥י אִמִּֽי׃
4he taught me and said, “Let your heart lay hold of my words; keep my commandments and you will live. 4וַיֹּרֵ֗נִי וַיֹּ֥אמֶר לִ֗י יִֽתְמָךְ־ דְּבָרַ֥י לִבֶּ֑ךָ שְׁמֹ֖ר מִצְוֺתַ֣י וֶֽחְיֵֽה׃
5Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or turn from them. 5קְנֵ֣ה חָ֭כְמָה קְנֵ֣ה בִינָ֑ה אַל־ תִּשְׁכַּ֥ח וְאַל־ תֵּ֝֗ט מֵֽאִמְרֵי־ פִֽי׃
6Do not forsake [wisdom], and she will preserve you; love her, and she will guard you. 6אַל־ תַּעַזְבֶ֥הָ וְתִשְׁמְרֶ֑ךָּ אֱהָבֶ֥הָ וְתִצְּרֶֽךָּ׃
7Wisdom is supreme; therefore acquire wisdom. And whatever else you obtain, gain understanding. 7רֵאשִׁ֣ית חָ֭כְמָה קְנֵ֣ה חָכְמָ֑ה וּבְכָל־ קִ֝נְיָנְךָ֗ קְנֵ֣ה בִינָֽה׃
8Prize her, and she will exalt you; if you embrace her, she will honor you. 8סַלְסְלֶ֥הָ וּֽתְרוֹמְמֶ֑ךָּ תְּ֝כַבֵּ֗דְךָ כִּ֣י תְחַבְּקֶֽנָּה׃
9She will set a garland of grace on your head; she will present you with a crown of beauty.” 9תִּתֵּ֣ן לְ֭רֹאשְׁךָ לִוְיַת־ חֵ֑ן עֲטֶ֖רֶת תִּפְאֶ֣רֶת תְּמַגְּנֶֽךָּ׃
10Listen, my son, and receive my words, and the years of your life will be many. 10שְׁמַ֣ע בְּ֭נִי וְקַ֣ח אֲמָרָ֑י וְיִרְבּ֥וּ לְ֝ךָ֗ שְׁנ֣וֹת חַיִּֽים׃
11I will guide you in the way of wisdom; I will lead you on straight paths. 11בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ חָ֭כְמָה הֹרֵתִ֑יךָ הִ֝דְרַכְתִּ֗יךָ בְּמַעְגְּלֵי־ יֹֽשֶׁר׃
12When you walk, your steps will not be impeded; when you run, you will not stumble. 12בְּֽ֭לֶכְתְּךָ לֹא־ יֵצַ֣ר צַעֲדֶ֑ךָ וְאִם־ תָּ֝ר֗וּץ לֹ֣א תִכָּשֵֽׁל׃
13Hold on to instruction; do not let go. Guard it, for it is your life. 13הַחֲזֵ֣ק בַּמּוּסָ֣ר אַל־ תֶּ֑רֶף נִ֝צְּרֶ֗הָ כִּי־ הִ֥יא חַיֶּֽיךָ׃
14Do not set foot on the path of the wicked [or] walk in the way of evil men. 14בְּאֹ֣רַח רְ֭שָׁעִים אַל־ תָּבֹ֑א וְאַל־ תְּ֝אַשֵּׁ֗ר בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ רָעִֽים׃
15Avoid it; do not travel on it. Turn from it and pass on by. 15פְּרָעֵ֥הוּ אַל־ תַּעֲבָר־ בּ֑וֹ שְׂטֵ֖ה מֵעָלָ֣יו וַעֲבֽוֹר׃
16For they cannot sleep unless they do evil, they are deprived of slumber until they make someone fall, 16כִּ֤י לֹ֣א יִֽ֭שְׁנוּ אִם־ לֹ֣א יָרֵ֑עוּ וְֽנִגְזְלָ֥ה שְׁ֝נָתָ֗ם אִם־ לֹ֥א [יכשולו] (יַכְשִֽׁילוּ׃)
17since they eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence. 17כִּ֣י לָ֭חֲמוּ לֶ֣חֶם רֶ֑שַׁע וְיֵ֖ין חֲמָסִ֣ים יִשְׁתּֽוּ׃
18The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining brighter and brighter until midday. 18וְאֹ֣רַח צַ֭דִּיקִים כְּא֣וֹר נֹ֑גַהּ הוֹלֵ֥ךְ וָ֝א֗וֹר עַד־ נְכ֥וֹן הַיּֽוֹם׃
19But the way of the wicked is like the darkest gloom; they do not know what makes them stumble. 19דֶּ֣רֶךְ רְ֭שָׁעִים כָּֽאֲפֵלָ֑ה לֹ֥א יָ֝דְע֗וּ בַּמֶּ֥ה יִכָּשֵֽׁלוּ׃ פ
20My son, pay attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. 20בְּ֭נִי לִדְבָרַ֣י הַקְשִׁ֑יבָה לַ֝אֲמָרַ֗י הַט־ אָזְנֶֽךָ׃
21Do not lose sight of them; keep them within your heart. 21אַל־ יַלִּ֥יזוּ מֵעֵינֶ֑יךָ שָׁ֝מְרֵ֗ם בְּת֣וֹךְ לְבָבֶֽךָ׃
22For they are life to those who find them, and health to the whole body. 22כִּֽי־ חַיִּ֣ים הֵ֭ם לְמֹצְאֵיהֶ֑ם וּֽלְכָל־ בְּשָׂר֥וֹ מַרְפֵּֽא׃
23Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow springs of life. 23מִֽכָּל־ מִ֭שְׁמָר נְצֹ֣ר לִבֶּ֑ךָ כִּֽי־ מִ֝מֶּ֗נּוּ תּוֹצְא֥וֹת חַיִּֽים׃
24Put away deception from your mouth; keep your lips from perverse speech. 24הָסֵ֣ר מִ֭מְּךָ עִקְּשׁ֣וּת פֶּ֑ה וּלְז֥וּת שְׂ֝פָתַ֗יִם הַרְחֵ֥ק מִמֶּֽךָּ׃
25Let your eyes look forward; fix your gaze straight ahead. 25עֵ֭ינֶיךָ לְנֹ֣כַח יַבִּ֑יטוּ וְ֝עַפְעַפֶּ֗יךָ יַיְשִׁ֥רוּ נֶגְדֶּֽךָ׃
26Make level paths for your feet, and all your ways will be sure. 26פַּ֭לֵּס מַעְגַּ֣ל רַגְלֶ֑ךָ וְֽכָל־ דְּרָכֶ֥יךָ יִכֹּֽנוּ׃
27Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your feet {away} from evil. 27אַֽל־ תֵּט־ יָמִ֥ין וּשְׂמֹ֑אול הָסֵ֖ר רַגְלְךָ֣ מֵרָֽע׃
