Please listen, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph’s descendants like a flock. O God, enthroned above the cherubim, display your radiant glory | 1For the music director; according to the shushan-eduth style; a psalm of Asaph. O shepherd of Israel, pay attention, you who lead Joseph like a flock of sheep! You who sit enthroned above the winged angels, reveal your splendor! |
to Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh. Show us your mighty power. Come to rescue us! | 2In the sight of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh reveal your power! Come and deliver us! |
Turn us again to yourself, O God. Make your face shine down upon us. Only then will we be saved. | 3O God, restore us! Smile on us! Then we will be delivered! |
O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies, how long will you be angry with our prayers? | 4O LORD God, invincible warrior! How long will you remain angry at your people while they pray to you? |
You have fed us with sorrow and made us drink tears by the bucketful. | 5You have given them tears as food; you have made them drink tears by the measure. |
You have made us the scorn of neighboring nations. Our enemies treat us as a joke. | 6You have made our neighbors dislike us, and our enemies insult us. |
Turn us again to yourself, O God of Heaven’s Armies. Make your face shine down upon us. Only then will we be saved. | 7O God, invincible warrior, restore us! Smile on us! Then we will be delivered! |
You brought us from Egypt like a grapevine; you drove away the pagan nations and transplanted us into your land. | 8You uprooted a vine from Egypt; you drove out nations and transplanted it. |
You cleared the ground for us, and we took root and filled the land. | 9You cleared the ground for it; it took root, and filled the land. |
Our shade covered the mountains; our branches covered the mighty cedars. | 10The mountains were covered by its shadow, the highest cedars by its branches. |
We spread our branches west to the Mediterranean Sea; our shoots spread east to the Euphrates River. | 11Its branches reached the Mediterranean Sea, and its shoots the Euphrates River. |
But now, why have you broken down our walls so that all who pass by may steal our fruit? | 12Why did you break down its walls, so that all who pass by pluck its fruit? |
The wild boar from the forest devours it, and the wild animals feed on it. | 13The wild boars of the forest ruin it; the insects of the field feed on it. |
Come back, we beg you, O God of Heaven’s Armies. Look down from heaven and see our plight. Take care of this grapevine | 14O God, invincible warrior, come back! Look down from heaven and take notice! Take care of this vine, |
that you yourself have planted, this son you have raised for yourself. | 15the root your right hand planted, the shoot you made to grow! |
For we are chopped up and burned by our enemies. May they perish at the sight of your frown. | 16It is burned and cut down. They die because you are displeased with them. |
Strengthen the man you love, the son of your choice. | 17May you give support to the one you have chosen, to the one whom you raised up for yourself! |
Then we will never abandon you again. Revive us so we can call on your name once more. | 18Then we will not turn away from you. Revive us and we will pray to you! |
Turn us again to yourself, O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies. Make your face shine down upon us. Only then will we be saved. | 19O LORD God, invincible warrior, restore us! Smile on us! Then we will be delivered! |
