New Living Translation | NET Bible |
O God, pagan nations have conquered your land, your special possession. They have defiled your holy Temple and made Jerusalem a heap of ruins. | 1A psalm of Asaph. O God, foreigners have invaded your chosen land; they have polluted your holy temple and turned Jerusalem into a heap of ruins. |
They have left the bodies of your servants as food for the birds of heaven. The flesh of your godly ones has become food for the wild animals. | 2They have given the corpses of your servants to the birds of the sky; the flesh of your loyal followers to the beasts of the earth. |
Blood has flowed like water all around Jerusalem; no one is left to bury the dead. | 3They have made their blood flow like water all around Jerusalem, and there is no one to bury them. |
We are mocked by our neighbors, an object of scorn and derision to those around us. | 4We have become an object of disdain to our neighbors; those who live on our borders taunt and insult us. |
O LORD, how long will you be angry with us? Forever? How long will your jealousy burn like fire? | 5How long will this go on, O LORD? Will you stay angry forever? How long will your rage burn like fire? |
Pour out your wrath on the nations that refuse to acknowledge you— on kingdoms that do not call upon your name. | 6Pour out your anger on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the kingdoms that do not pray to you! |
For they have devoured your people Israel, making the land a desolate wilderness. | 7For they have devoured Jacob and destroyed his home. |
Do not hold us guilty for the sins of our ancestors! Let your compassion quickly meet our needs, for we are on the brink of despair. | 8Do not hold us accountable for the sins of earlier generations! Quickly send your compassion our way, for we are in serious trouble! |
Help us, O God of our salvation! Help us for the glory of your name. Save us and forgive our sins for the honor of your name. | 9Help us, O God, our deliverer! For the sake of your glorious reputation, rescue us! Forgive our sins for the sake of your reputation! |
Why should pagan nations be allowed to scoff, asking, “Where is their God?” Show us your vengeance against the nations, for they have spilled the blood of your servants. | 10Why should the nations say, "Where is their God?" Before our very eyes may the shed blood of your servants be avenged among the nations! |
Listen to the moaning of the prisoners. Demonstrate your great power by saving those condemned to die. | 11Listen to the painful cries of the prisoners! Use your great strength to set free those condemned to die! |
O Lord, pay back our neighbors seven times for the scorn they have hurled at you. | 12Pay back our neighbors in full! May they be insulted the same way they insulted you, O Lord! |
Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will thank you forever and ever, praising your greatness from generation to generation. | 13Then we, your people, the sheep of your pasture, will continually thank you. We will tell coming generations of your praiseworthy acts. |
