Please listen, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph’s descendants like a flock. O God, enthroned above the cherubim, display your radiant glory | 1For the choir director; set to El Shoshannim; Eduth. A Psalm of Asaph. Oh, give ear, Shepherd of Israel, You who lead Joseph like a flock; You who are enthroned above the cherubim, shine forth! |
to Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh. Show us your mighty power. Come to rescue us! | 2Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh, stir up Your power And come to save us! |
Turn us again to yourself, O God. Make your face shine down upon us. Only then will we be saved. | 3O God, restore us And cause Your face to shine upon us, and we will be saved. |
O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies, how long will you be angry with our prayers? | 4O LORD God of hosts, How long will You be angry with the prayer of Your people? |
You have fed us with sorrow and made us drink tears by the bucketful. | 5You have fed them with the bread of tears, And You have made them to drink tears in large measure. |
You have made us the scorn of neighboring nations. Our enemies treat us as a joke. | 6You make us an object of contention to our neighbors, And our enemies laugh among themselves. |
Turn us again to yourself, O God of Heaven’s Armies. Make your face shine down upon us. Only then will we be saved. | 7O God of hosts, restore us And cause Your face to shine upon us, and we will be saved. |
You brought us from Egypt like a grapevine; you drove away the pagan nations and transplanted us into your land. | 8You removed a vine from Egypt; You drove out the nations and planted it. |
You cleared the ground for us, and we took root and filled the land. | 9You cleared the ground before it, And it took deep root and filled the land. |
Our shade covered the mountains; our branches covered the mighty cedars. | 10The mountains were covered with its shadow, And the cedars of God with its boughs. |
We spread our branches west to the Mediterranean Sea; our shoots spread east to the Euphrates River. | 11It was sending out its branches to the sea And its shoots to the River. |
But now, why have you broken down our walls so that all who pass by may steal our fruit? | 12Why have You broken down its hedges, So that all who pass that way pick its fruit? |
The wild boar from the forest devours it, and the wild animals feed on it. | 13A boar from the forest eats it away And whatever moves in the field feeds on it. |
Come back, we beg you, O God of Heaven’s Armies. Look down from heaven and see our plight. Take care of this grapevine | 14O God of hosts, turn again now, we beseech You; Look down from heaven and see, and take care of this vine, |
that you yourself have planted, this son you have raised for yourself. | 15Even the shoot which Your right hand has planted, And on the son whom You have strengthened for Yourself. |
For we are chopped up and burned by our enemies. May they perish at the sight of your frown. | 16It is burned with fire, it is cut down; They perish at the rebuke of Your countenance. |
Strengthen the man you love, the son of your choice. | 17Let Your hand be upon the man of Your right hand, Upon the son of man whom You made strong for Yourself. |
Then we will never abandon you again. Revive us so we can call on your name once more. | 18Then we shall not turn back from You; Revive us, and we will call upon Your name. |
Turn us again to yourself, O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies. Make your face shine down upon us. Only then will we be saved. | 19O LORD God of hosts, restore us; Cause Your face to shine upon us, and we will be saved. |
