New Living Translation | King James Bible |
Please listen, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph’s descendants like a flock. O God, enthroned above the cherubim, display your radiant glory | 1To the chief Musician upon ShoshannimEduth, A Psalm of Asaph. Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like a flock; thou that dwellest between the cherubims, shine forth. |
to Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh. Show us your mighty power. Come to rescue us! | 2Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh stir up thy strength, and come and save us. |
Turn us again to yourself, O God. Make your face shine down upon us. Only then will we be saved. | 3Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved. |
O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies, how long will you be angry with our prayers? | 4O LORD God of hosts, how long wilt thou be angry against the prayer of thy people? |
You have fed us with sorrow and made us drink tears by the bucketful. | 5Thou feedest them with the bread of tears; and givest them tears to drink in great measure. |
You have made us the scorn of neighboring nations. Our enemies treat us as a joke. | 6Thou makest us a strife unto our neighbours: and our enemies laugh among themselves. |
Turn us again to yourself, O God of Heaven’s Armies. Make your face shine down upon us. Only then will we be saved. | 7Turn us again, O God of hosts, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved. |
You brought us from Egypt like a grapevine; you drove away the pagan nations and transplanted us into your land. | 8Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt: thou hast cast out the heathen, and planted it. |
You cleared the ground for us, and we took root and filled the land. | 9Thou preparedst room before it, and didst cause it to take deep root, and it filled the land. |
Our shade covered the mountains; our branches covered the mighty cedars. | 10The hills were covered with the shadow of it, and the boughs thereof were like the goodly cedars. |
We spread our branches west to the Mediterranean Sea; our shoots spread east to the Euphrates River. | 11She sent out her boughs unto the sea, and her branches unto the river. |
But now, why have you broken down our walls so that all who pass by may steal our fruit? | 12Why hast thou then broken down her hedges, so that all they which pass by the way do pluck her? |
The wild boar from the forest devours it, and the wild animals feed on it. | 13The boar out of the wood doth waste it, and the wild beast of the field doth devour it. |
Come back, we beg you, O God of Heaven’s Armies. Look down from heaven and see our plight. Take care of this grapevine | 14Return, we beseech thee, O God of hosts: look down from heaven, and behold, and visit this vine; |
that you yourself have planted, this son you have raised for yourself. | 15And the vineyard which thy right hand hath planted, and the branch that thou madest strong for thyself. |
For we are chopped up and burned by our enemies. May they perish at the sight of your frown. | 16It is burned with fire, it is cut down: they perish at the rebuke of thy countenance. |
Strengthen the man you love, the son of your choice. | 17Let thy hand be upon the man of thy right hand, upon the son of man whom thou madest strong for thyself. |
Then we will never abandon you again. Revive us so we can call on your name once more. | 18So will not we go back from thee: quicken us, and we will call upon thy name. |
Turn us again to yourself, O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies. Make your face shine down upon us. Only then will we be saved. | 19Turn us again, O LORD God of hosts, cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved. |
