New Living Translation | New American Standard Bible 1995 |
“When Israel was a child, I loved him, and I called my son out of Egypt. | 1When Israel was a youth I loved him, And out of Egypt I called My son. |
But the more I called to him, the farther he moved from me, offering sacrifices to the images of Baal and burning incense to idols. | 2The more they called them, The more they went from them; They kept sacrificing to the Baals And burning incense to idols. |
I myself taught Israel how to walk, leading him along by the hand. But he doesn’t know or even care that it was I who took care of him. | 3Yet it is I who taught Ephraim to walk, I took them in My arms; But they did not know that I healed them. |
I led Israel along with my ropes of kindness and love. I lifted the yoke from his neck, and I myself stooped to feed him. | 4I led them with cords of a man, with bonds of love, And I became to them as one who lifts the yoke from their jaws; And I bent down and fed them. |
“But since my people refuse to return to me, they will return to Egypt and will be forced to serve Assyria. | 5They will not return to the land of Egypt; But Assyria-- he will be their king Because they refused to return to Me. |
War will swirl through their cities; their enemies will crash through their gates. They will destroy them, trapping them in their own evil plans. | 6The sword will whirl against their cities, And will demolish their gate bars And consume them because of their counsels. |
For my people are determined to desert me. They call me the Most High, but they don’t truly honor me. | 7So My people are bent on turning from Me. Though they call them to the One on high, None at all exalts Him. |
“Oh, how can I give you up, Israel? How can I let you go? How can I destroy you like Admah or demolish you like Zeboiim? My heart is torn within me, and my compassion overflows. | 8How can I give you up, O Ephraim? How can I surrender you, O Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart is turned over within Me, All My compassions are kindled. |
No, I will not unleash my fierce anger. I will not completely destroy Israel, for I am God and not a mere mortal. I am the Holy One living among you, and I will not come to destroy. | 9I will not execute My fierce anger; I will not destroy Ephraim again. For I am God and not man, the Holy One in your midst, And I will not come in wrath. |
For someday the people will follow me. I, the LORD, will roar like a lion. And when I roar, my people will return trembling from the west. | 10They will walk after the LORD, He will roar like a lion; Indeed He will roar And His sons will come trembling from the west. |
Like a flock of birds, they will come from Egypt. Trembling like doves, they will return from Assyria. And I will bring them home again,” says the LORD. Charges against Israel and Judah | 11They will come trembling like birds from Egypt And like doves from the land of Assyria; And I will settle them in their houses, declares the LORD. |
Israel surrounds me with lies and deceit, but Judah still obeys God and is faithful to the Holy One. | 12Ephraim surrounds Me with lies And the house of Israel with deceit; Judah is also unruly against God, Even against the Holy One who is faithful. |
