New Living Translation | International Standard Version |
“When Israel was a child, I loved him, and I called my son out of Egypt. | 1"When Israel was a young child I loved him, and from Egypt I called my son. |
But the more I called to him, the farther he moved from me, offering sacrifices to the images of Baal and burning incense to idols. | 2The more I called out to them, the farther they fled from me; they sacrificed to Baals, burning incense to carved images. |
I myself taught Israel how to walk, leading him along by the hand. But he doesn’t know or even care that it was I who took care of him. | 3Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk, supporting them by their arms, but they never knew that I was healing them. |
I led Israel along with my ropes of kindness and love. I lifted the yoke from his neck, and I myself stooped to feed him. | 4I guided them with human kindness, with loving reins. I acted toward them like one who removes a yoke from their neck; I bent down and fed them. |
“But since my people refuse to return to me, they will return to Egypt and will be forced to serve Assyria. | 5"They will not return to the land of Egypt; instead, the Assyrian will be their king, because they kept refusing to repent. |
War will swirl through their cities; their enemies will crash through their gates. They will destroy them, trapping them in their own evil plans. | 6The sword will fall on their cities, consuming and devouring their fortified gates, despite their planning. |
For my people are determined to desert me. They call me the Most High, but they don’t truly honor me. | 7My people are determined to turn away from me; though they call to the Most High, no one is worshiping. |
“Oh, how can I give you up, Israel? How can I let you go? How can I destroy you like Admah or demolish you like Zeboiim? My heart is torn within me, and my compassion overflows. | 8"How can I give up on you, Ephraim? I will deliver you, will I not, Israel? How can I treat you like Admah? I can't make you like Zeboim, can I? My heart stirs within me; my compassion also fans into flame! |
No, I will not unleash my fierce anger. I will not completely destroy Israel, for I am God and not a mere mortal. I am the Holy One living among you, and I will not come to destroy. | 9I will not act in my anger; I will not return to destroy Ephraim, For I am God, and not a human— the Holy One among you— so I will not enter the city in anger. |
For someday the people will follow me. I, the LORD, will roar like a lion. And when I roar, my people will return trembling from the west. | 10They will go after the LORD, who will roar like a lion; and when he roars, the children will come trembling from the west. |
Like a flock of birds, they will come from Egypt. Trembling like doves, they will return from Assyria. And I will bring them home again,” says the LORD. Charges against Israel and Judah | 11Trembling like a bird, they will come out of Egypt, and as a dove from the land of Assyria; and I will settle them in their houses," declares the LORD. |
Israel surrounds me with lies and deceit, but Judah still obeys God and is faithful to the Holy One. | 12 "Ephraim surrounds me with lies, and the house of Israel surrounds me with deceit, But Judah still rules with God, and remains faithful, along with the godly ones." |
