Then Job spoke again: | 1Then Job answered and said, |
“How long will you torture me? How long will you try to crush me with your words? | 2How long will ye vex my soul, and break me in pieces with words? |
You have already insulted me ten times. You should be ashamed of treating me so badly. | 3These ten times have ye reproached me: ye are not ashamed that ye make yourselves strange to me. |
Even if I have sinned, that is my concern, not yours. | 4And be it indeed that I have erred, mine error remaineth with myself. |
You think you’re better than I am, using my humiliation as evidence of my sin. | 5If indeed ye will magnify yourselves against me, and plead against me my reproach: |
But it is God who has wronged me, capturing me in his net. | 6Know now that God hath overthrown me, and hath compassed me with his net. |
“I cry out, ‘Help!’ but no one answers me. I protest, but there is no justice. | 7Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard: I cry aloud, but there is no judgment. |
God has blocked my way so I cannot move. He has plunged my path into darkness. | 8He hath fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and he hath set darkness in my paths. |
He has stripped me of my honor and removed the crown from my head. | 9He hath stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head. |
He has demolished me on every side, and I am finished. He has uprooted my hope like a fallen tree. | 10He hath destroyed me on every side, and I am gone: and mine hope hath he removed like a tree. |
His fury burns against me; he counts me as an enemy. | 11He hath also kindled his wrath against me, and he counteth me unto him as one of his enemies. |
His troops advance. They build up roads to attack me. They camp all around my tent. | 12His troops come together, and raise up their way against me, and encamp round about my tabernacle. |
“My relatives stay far away, and my friends have turned against me. | 13He hath put my brethren far from me, and mine acquaintance are verily estranged from me. |
My family is gone, and my close friends have forgotten me. | 14My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me. |
My servants and maids consider me a stranger. I am like a foreigner to them. | 15They that dwell in mine house, and my maids, count me for a stranger: I am an alien in their sight. |
When I call my servant, he doesn’t come; I have to plead with him! | 16I called my servant, and he gave me no answer; I intreated him with my mouth. |
My breath is repulsive to my wife. I am rejected by my own family. | 17My breath is strange to my wife, though I intreated for the children's sake of mine own body. |
Even young children despise me. When I stand to speak, they turn their backs on me. | 18Yea, young children despised me; I arose, and they spake against me. |
My close friends detest me. Those I loved have turned against me. | 19All my inward friends abhorred me: and they whom I loved are turned against me. |
I have been reduced to skin and bones and have escaped death by the skin of my teeth. | 20My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth. |
“Have mercy on me, my friends, have mercy, for the hand of God has struck me. | 21Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God hath touched me. |
Must you also persecute me, like God does? Haven’t you chewed me up enough? | 22Why do ye persecute me as God, and are not satisfied with my flesh? |
“Oh, that my words could be recorded. Oh, that they could be inscribed on a monument, | 23Oh that my words were now written! oh that they were printed in a book! |
carved with an iron chisel and filled with lead, engraved forever in the rock. | 24That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock for ever! |
“But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and he will stand upon the earth at last. | 25For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: |
And after my body has decayed, yet in my body I will see God! | 26And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: |
I will see him for myself. Yes, I will see him with my own eyes. I am overwhelmed at the thought! | 27Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me. |
“How dare you go on persecuting me, saying, ‘It’s his own fault’? | 28But ye should say, Why persecute we him, seeing the root of the matter is found in me? |
You should fear punishment yourselves, for your attitude deserves punishment. Then you will know that there is indeed a judgment.” | 29Be ye afraid of the sword: for wrath bringeth the punishments of the sword, that ye may know there is a judgment. |
