| 1Again a message came to me from the LORD: | 1The word of the LORD came to me: " |
| 2“Son of man, turn and face Mount Seir, and prophesy against its people. | 2Son of man, turn your face toward Mount Seir and prophesy against it. |
| 3Give them this message from the Sovereign LORD: “I am your enemy, O Mount Seir, and I will raise my fist against you to destroy you completely. | 3Say to it: This is what the Lord GOD says: Look! I am against you, Mount Seir. I will stretch out My hand against you and make you a desolate waste. |
| 4I will demolish your cities and make you desolate. Then you will know that I am the LORD. | 4I will turn your cities into ruins, and you will become a desolation. Then you will know that I am Yahweh." |
| 5“Your eternal hatred for the people of Israel led you to butcher them when they were helpless, when I had already punished them for all their sins. | 5Because you maintained an ancient hatred and handed over the Israelites to the power of the sword in the time of their disaster, the time of final punishment, |
| 6As surely as I live, says the Sovereign LORD, since you show no distaste for blood, I will give you a bloodbath of your own. Your turn has come! | 6therefore, as I live"--this is the declaration of the Lord GOD--"I will destine you for bloodshed, and it will pursue you. Since you did not hate bloodshed, it will pursue you. |
| 7I will make Mount Seir utterly desolate, killing off all who try to escape and any who return. | 7I will make Mount Seir a desolate waste and will cut off from it those who come and go. |
| 8I will fill your mountains with the dead. Your hills, your valleys, and your ravines will be filled with people slaughtered by the sword. | 8I will fill its mountains with the slain; those slain by the sword will fall on your hills, in your valleys, and in all your ravines. |
| 9I will make you desolate forever. Your cities will never be rebuilt. Then you will know that I am the LORD. | 9I will make you a perpetual desolation; your cities will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am Yahweh." |
| 10“For you said, ‘The lands of Israel and Judah will be ours. We will take possession of them. What do we care that the LORD is there!’ | 10Because you said, 'These two nations and two lands will be mine, and we will possess them--though the LORD was there-- |
| 11Therefore, as surely as I live, says the Sovereign LORD, I will pay back your angry deeds with my own. I will punish you for all your acts of anger, envy, and hatred. And I will make myself known to Israel by what I do to you. | 11therefore, as I live"--the declaration of the Lord GOD--"I will treat you according to the anger and jealousy you showed in your hatred of them. I will make Myself known among them when I judge you. |
| 12Then you will know that I, the LORD, have heard every contemptuous word you spoke against the mountains of Israel. For you said, ‘They are desolate; they have been given to us as food to eat!’ | 12Then you will know that I, Yahweh, have heard all the blasphemies you uttered against the mountains of Israel, saying, 'They are desolate. They have been given to us to devour!' |
| 13In saying that, you boasted proudly against me, and I have heard it all! | 13You boasted against Me with your mouth, and spoke many words against Me. I heard it Myself!" |
| 14“This is what the Sovereign LORD says: The whole world will rejoice when I make you desolate. | 14This is what the Lord GOD says: While the whole world rejoices, I will make you a desolation. |
| 15You rejoiced at the desolation of Israel’s territory. Now I will rejoice at yours! You will be wiped out, you people of Mount Seir and all who live in Edom! Then you will know that I am the LORD. | 15Just as you rejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel because it became a desolation, so I will deal with you: you will become a desolation, Mount Seir, and so will all Edom in its entirety. Then they will know that I am Yahweh." |
