| 1Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. | 1Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. |
| 2Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory. | 2Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. |
| 3We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. | 3Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, |
| 4And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. | 4and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, |
| 5And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love. | 5and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. |
| 6When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. | 6For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. |
| 7Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. | 7For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— |
| 8But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. | 8but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. |
| 9And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation. | 9Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. |
| 10For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. | 10For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. |
| 11So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God. Adam and Christ Contrasted | 11More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. |
| 12When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned. | 12Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— |
| 13Yes, people sinned even before the law was given. But it was not counted as sin because there was not yet any law to break. | 13for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. |
| 14Still, everyone died—from the time of Adam to the time of Moses—even those who did not disobey an explicit commandment of God, as Adam did. Now Adam is a symbol, a representation of Christ, who was yet to come. | 14Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. |
| 15But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ. | 15But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. |
| 16And the result of God’s gracious gift is very different from the result of that one man’s sin. For Adam’s sin led to condemnation, but God’s free gift leads to our being made right with God, even though we are guilty of many sins. | 16And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. |
| 17For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ. | 17For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. |
| 18Yes, Adam’s one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ’s one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone. | 18Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. |
| 19Because one person disobeyed God, many became sinners. But because one other person obeyed God, many will be made righteous. | 19For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. |
| 20God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant. | 20Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, |
| 21So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. | 21so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. |
