New King James Version | New International Version |
Then as He went out of the temple, one of His disciples said to Him, “Teacher, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here!” | 1As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!" |
And Jesus answered and said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone shall be left upon another, that shall not be thrown down.” | 2"Do you see all these great buildings?" replied Jesus. "Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down." |
Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked Him privately, | 3As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately, |
“Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign when all these things will be fulfilled?” | 4"Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?" |
And Jesus, answering them, began to say: “Take heed that no one deceives you. | 5Jesus said to them: "Watch out that no one deceives you. |
For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and will deceive many. | 6Many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and will deceive many. |
But when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be troubled; for such things must happen, but the end is not yet. | 7When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. |
For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. | 8Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains. |
“But watch out for yourselves, for they will deliver you up to councils, and you will be beaten in the synagogues. You will be brought before rulers and kings for My sake, for a testimony to them. | 9"You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. |
And the gospel must first be preached to all the nations. | 10And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. |
But when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. | 11Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. |
Now brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. | 12"Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. |
And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end shall be saved. | 13Everyone will hate you because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. |
“So when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not” (let the reader understand), “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. | 14"When you see 'the abomination that causes desolation' standing where it does not belong--let the reader understand--then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. |
Let him who is on the housetop not go down into the house, nor enter to take anything out of his house. | 15Let no one on the housetop go down or enter the house to take anything out. |
And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. | 16Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. |
But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! | 17How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! |
And pray that your flight may not be in winter. | 18Pray that this will not take place in winter, |
For in those days there will be tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the creation which God created until this time, nor ever shall be. | 19because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now--and never to be equaled again. |
And unless the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake, whom He chose, He shortened the days. | 20"If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them. |
“Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or, ‘Look, He is there!’ do not believe it. | 21At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Messiah!' or, 'Look, there he is!' do not believe it. |
For false christs and false prophets will rise and show signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. | 22For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. |
But take heed; see, I have told you all things beforehand. | 23So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time. |
“But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; | 24"But in those days, following that distress, "'the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; |
the stars of heaven will fall, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. | 25the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.' |
Then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. | 26"At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. |
And then He will send His angels, and gather together His elect from the four winds, from the farthest part of earth to the farthest part of heaven. | 27And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens. |
“Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender, and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. | 28"Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. |
So you also, when you see these things happening, know that it is near—at the doors! | 29Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door. |
Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. | 30Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. |
Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. | 31Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. |
“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. | 32"But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. |
Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is. | 33Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. |
It is like a man going to a far country, who left his house and gave authority to his servants, and to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to watch. | 34It's like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. |
Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming—in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning— | 35"Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back--whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. |
lest, coming suddenly, he find you sleeping. | 36If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. |
And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!” | 37What I say to you, I say to everyone: 'Watch!'" |
