Jesus began by telling them
This phrase indicates the start of a significant discourse by Jesus, often referred to as the Olivet Discourse, delivered on the Mount of Olives. This location is significant in biblical prophecy and eschatology, as it is associated with the return of Christ (Zechariah 14:4). The setting underscores the importance of the message, as Jesus is addressing His disciples privately, preparing them for future events.

See to it that no one deceives you
Jesus warns His disciples about the danger of deception, a recurring theme in His teachings. This caution is particularly relevant in the context of the end times, where false prophets and messiahs will arise (Matthew 24:24). The emphasis on vigilance against deception is echoed in other New Testament writings, such as Paul's letters (2 Thessalonians 2:3) and John's epistles (1 John 4:1). The warning serves as a call for discernment and faithfulness to the truth of the Gospel, highlighting the spiritual warfare believers will face.

Persons / Places / Events
1. Jesus
The central figure in this passage, Jesus is addressing His disciples, warning them about future deceptions.

2. Disciples
The immediate audience of Jesus' warning, representing all believers who are called to be vigilant.

3. Mount of Olives
The location where Jesus delivers the Olivet Discourse, which includes this warning about deception.

4. False Prophets
Implied in the warning, these are individuals who will attempt to lead believers astray.

5. End Times
The broader context of this passage, as Jesus discusses signs of the end times and the need for discernment.
Teaching Points
Vigilance Against Deception
Believers must be constantly alert and discerning, aware that deception can come from both external and internal sources.

Grounding in Scripture
Knowing the Word of God is essential to recognize and resist deception. Regular study and meditation on Scripture provide a solid foundation.

Spiritual Discernment
Cultivating a relationship with the Holy Spirit is crucial for discernment. Prayer and seeking God's wisdom help believers navigate false teachings.

Community Accountability
Engaging with a community of believers provides support and accountability, helping to identify and resist deceptive influences.

Endurance in Faith
In the face of deception, maintaining steadfast faith and trust in Jesus is vital. Believers are called to endure and remain faithful until the end.(5) And Jesus answering them began to say.--The report which follows, common as it is to the first three Gospels, serves as an admirable example of the extent of variation compatible with substantial accuracy, and with the recognition of an inspired guidance as ensuring that accuracy. The discourse obviously made a deep impression on those who heard it, as afterwards on those to whom they repeated it, and so it passed from mouth to mouth, but probably it was not committed to writing till the events which it foretold came within the horizon. On all points common to the three records, see Notes on Matthew 24.

Verses 5, 6. - Take heed that no man lead you astray. The Greek word is πλανήση. Their first temptation would be of this kind - that many would come in Christ's name, saying, "I am he;" claiming, that is, the title which belonged to him alone. Such were Theudas (Acts 5:36) and Simon Magus (Acts 8:10), who, according to Jerome, said, "Ego sum Sermo Dei, ego speciosus, ego Paracletus, ego omnipotens, ego omnia." Such were Menander and the Gnostics.
