New King James Version | NET Bible |
“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. | 1"I am the true vine and my Father is the gardener. |
Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. | 2He takes away every branch that does not bear fruit in me. He prunes every branch that bears fruit so that it will bear more fruit. |
You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. | 3You are clean already because of the word that I have spoken to you. |
Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. | 4Remain in me, and I will remain in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. |
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. | 5"I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me--and I in him--bears much fruit, because apart from me you can accomplish nothing. |
If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. | 6If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown out like a branch, and dries up; and such branches are gathered up and thrown into the fire, and are burned up. |
If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. | 7If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want, and it will be done for you. |
By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. | 8My Father is honored by this, that you bear much fruit and show that you are my disciples. |
“As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. | 9"Just as the Father has loved me, I have also loved you; remain in my love. |
If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. | 10If you obey my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commandments and remain in his love. |
“These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full. | 11I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you, and your joy may be complete. |
This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. | 12My commandment is this--to love one another just as I have loved you. |
Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. | 13No one has greater love than this--that one lays down his life for his friends. |
You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. | 14You are my friends if you do what I command you. |
No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. | 15I no longer call you slaves, because the slave does not understand what his master is doing. But I have called you friends, because I have revealed to you everything I heard from my Father. |
You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. | 16You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that remains, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you. |
These things I command you, that you love one another. | 17This I command you--to love one another. |
“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. | 18"If the world hates you, be aware that it hated me first. |
If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. | 19If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own. However, because you do not belong to the world, but I chose you out of the world, for this reason the world hates you. |
Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. | 20Remember what I told you, 'A slave is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they obeyed my word, they will obey yours too. |
But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. | 21But they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know the one who sent me. |
If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. | 22If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. But they no longer have any excuse for their sin. |
He who hates Me hates My Father also. | 23The one who hates me hates my Father too. |
If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father. | 24If I had not performed among them the miraculous deeds that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen the deeds and have hated both me and my Father. |
But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’ | 25Now this happened to fulfill the word that is written in their law, 'They hated me without reason.' |
“But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. | 26When the Advocate comes, whom I will send you from the Father--the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father--he will testify about me, |
And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning. | 27and you also will testify, because you have been with me from the beginning. |
