New King James Version | King James Bible |
“Do you know the time when the wild mountain goats bear young? Or can you mark when the deer gives birth? | 1Knowest thou the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? or canst thou mark when the hinds do calve? |
Can you number the months that they fulfill? Or do you know the time when they bear young? | 2Canst thou number the months that they fulfil? or knowest thou the time when they bring forth? |
They bow down, They bring forth their young, They deliver their offspring. | 3They bow themselves, they bring forth their young ones, they cast out their sorrows. |
Their young ones are healthy, They grow strong with grain; They depart and do not return to them. | 4Their young ones are in good liking, they grow up with corn; they go forth, and return not unto them. |
“Who set the wild donkey free? Who loosed the bonds of the onager, | 5Who hath sent out the wild ass free? or who hath loosed the bands of the wild ass? |
Whose home I have made the wilderness, And the barren land his dwelling? | 6Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the barren land his dwellings. |
He scorns the tumult of the city; He does not heed the shouts of the driver. | 7He scorneth the multitude of the city, neither regardeth he the crying of the driver. |
The range of the mountains is his pasture, And he searches after every green thing. | 8The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searcheth after every green thing. |
“Will the wild ox be willing to serve you? Will he bed by your manger? | 9Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib? |
Can you bind the wild ox in the furrow with ropes? Or will he plow the valleys behind you? | 10Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee? |
Will you trust him because his strength is great? Or will you leave your labor to him? | 11Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great? or wilt thou leave thy labour to him? |
Will you trust him to bring home your grain, And gather it to your threshing floor? | 12Wilt thou believe him, that he will bring home thy seed, and gather it into thy barn? |
“The wings of the ostrich wave proudly, But are her wings and pinions like the kindly stork’s? | 13Gavest thou the goodly wings unto the peacocks? or wings and feathers unto the ostrich? |
For she leaves her eggs on the ground, And warms them in the dust; | 14Which leaveth her eggs in the earth, and warmeth them in dust, |
She forgets that a foot may crush them, Or that a wild beast may break them. | 15And forgetteth that the foot may crush them, or that the wild beast may break them. |
She treats her young harshly, as though they were not hers; Her labor is in vain, without concern, | 16She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers: her labour is in vain without fear; |
Because God deprived her of wisdom, And did not endow her with understanding. | 17Because God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he imparted to her understanding. |
When she lifts herself on high, She scorns the horse and its rider. | 18What time she lifteth up herself on high, she scorneth the horse and his rider. |
“Have you given the horse strength? Have you clothed his neck with thunder? | 19Hast thou given the horse strength? hast thou clothed his neck with thunder? |
Can you frighten him like a locust? His majestic snorting strikes terror. | 20Canst thou make him afraid as a grasshopper? the glory of his nostrils is terrible. |
He paws in the valley, and rejoices in his strength; He gallops into the clash of arms. | 21He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength: he goeth on to meet the armed men. |
He mocks at fear, and is not frightened; Nor does he turn back from the sword. | 22He mocketh at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turneth he back from the sword. |
The quiver rattles against him, The glittering spear and javelin. | 23The quiver rattleth against him, the glittering spear and the shield. |
He devours the distance with fierceness and rage; Nor does he come to a halt because the trumpet has sounded. | 24He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believeth he that it is the sound of the trumpet. |
At the blast of the trumpet he says, ‘Aha!’ He smells the battle from afar, The thunder of captains and shouting. | 25He saith among the trumpets, Ha, ha; and he smelleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting. |
“Does the hawk fly by your wisdom, And spread its wings toward the south? | 26Doth the hawk fly by thy wisdom, and stretch her wings toward the south? |
Does the eagle mount up at your command, And make its nest on high? | 27Doth the eagle mount up at thy command, and make her nest on high? |
On the rock it dwells and resides, On the crag of the rock and the stronghold. | 28She dwelleth and abideth on the rock, upon the crag of the rock, and the strong place. |
From there it spies out the prey; Its eyes observe from afar. | 29From thence she seeketh the prey, and her eyes behold afar off. |
Its young ones suck up blood; And where the slain are, there it is.” | 30Her young ones also suck up blood: and where the slain are, there is she. |
