Now it happened in Iconium that they went together to the synagogue of the Jews, and so spoke that a great multitude both of the Jews and of the Greeks believed.1The same thing happened in Iconium; they entered the Jewish synagogue and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed.
But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brethren.2But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up and poisoned the minds of the Gentiles against the brothers.
Therefore they stayed there a long time, speaking boldly in the Lord, who was bearing witness to the word of His grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands.3So they stayed there for some time and spoke boldly in reliance on the Lord, who testified to the message of His grace by granting that signs and wonders be performed through them.
But the multitude of the city was divided: part sided with the Jews, and part with the apostles.4But the people of the city were divided, some siding with the Jews and some with the apostles.
And when a violent attempt was made by both the Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, to abuse and stone them,5When an attempt was made by both the Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, to assault and stone them,
they became aware of it and fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding region.6they found out about it and fled to the Lycaonian towns called Lystra and Derbe, and to the surrounding countryside.
And they were preaching the gospel there.7And there they kept evangelizing.
And in Lystra a certain man without strength in his feet was sitting, a cripple from his mother’s womb, who had never walked.8In Lystra a man without strength in his feet, lame from birth, and who had never walked, sat
This man heard Paul speaking. Paul, observing him intently and seeing that he had faith to be healed,9and heard Paul speaking. After observing him closely and seeing that he had faith to be healed,
said with a loud voice, “Stand up straight on your feet!” And he leaped and walked.10Paul said in a loud voice, "Stand upright on your feet!" And he jumped up and started to walk around.
Now when the people saw what Paul had done, they raised their voices, saying in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!”11When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they raised their voices, saying in the Lycaonian language, "The gods have come down to us in the form of men!"
And Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.12And they started to call Barnabas, Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the main speaker.
Then the priest of Zeus, whose temple was in front of their city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, intending to sacrifice with the multitudes.13Then the priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the town, brought oxen and garlands to the gates. He, with the crowds, intended to offer sacrifice.
But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard this, they tore their clothes and ran in among the multitude, crying out14The apostles Barnabas and Paul tore their robes when they heard this and rushed into the crowd, shouting:"
and saying, “Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men with the same nature as you, and preach to you that you should turn from these useless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all things that are in them,15Men! Why are you doing these things? We are men also, with the same nature as you, and we are proclaiming good news to you, that you should turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and everything in them.
who in bygone generations allowed all nations to walk in their own ways.16In past generations He allowed all the nations to go their own way,
Nevertheless He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good, gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.”17although He did not leave Himself without a witness, since He did what is good by giving you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons and satisfying your hearts with food and happiness."
And with these sayings they could scarcely restrain the multitudes from sacrificing to them.18Even though they said these things, they barely stopped the crowds from sacrificing to them.
Then Jews from Antioch and Iconium came there; and having persuaded the multitudes, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing him to be dead.19Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and when they had won over the crowds and stoned Paul, they dragged him out of the city, thinking he was dead.
However, when the disciples gathered around him, he rose up and went into the city. And the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.20After the disciples surrounded him, he got up and went into the town. The next day he left with Barnabas for Derbe.
And when they had preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch,21After they had evangelized that town and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, to Iconium, and to Antioch,
strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying, “We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God.”22strengthening the disciples by encouraging them to continue in the faith and by telling them, "It is necessary to pass through many troubles on our way into the kingdom of God."
So when they had appointed elders in every church, and prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed.23When they had appointed elders in every church and prayed with fasting, they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed.
And after they had passed through Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia.24Then they passed through Pisidia and came to Pamphylia.
Now when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.25After they spoke the message in Perga, they went down to Attalia.
From there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work which they had completed.26From there they sailed back to Antioch where they had been entrusted to the grace of God for the work they had now completed.
Now when they had come and gathered the church together, they reported all that God had done with them, and that He had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.27After they arrived and gathered the church together, they reported everything God had done with them and that He had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.
So they stayed there a long time with the disciples.28And they spent a considerable time with the disciples.
