Now it happened in Iconium that they went together to the synagogue of the Jews, and so spoke that a great multitude both of the Jews and of the Greeks believed.1At Iconium, Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue, where they spoke so well that a great number of Jews and Greeks believed.
But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brethren.2But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.
Therefore they stayed there a long time, speaking boldly in the Lord, who was bearing witness to the word of His grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands.3So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who affirmed the message of His grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders.
But the multitude of the city was divided: part sided with the Jews, and part with the apostles.4The people of the city were divided. Some sided with the Jews, and others with the apostles.
And when a violent attempt was made by both the Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, to abuse and stone them,5But when the Gentiles and Jews, together with their rulers, set out to mistreat and stone them,
they became aware of it and fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding region.6they found out about it and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding region,
And they were preaching the gospel there.7where they continued to preach the gospel.
And in Lystra a certain man without strength in his feet was sitting, a cripple from his mother’s womb, who had never walked.8In Lystra there sat a man crippled in his feet, who was lame from birth and had never walked.
This man heard Paul speaking. Paul, observing him intently and seeing that he had faith to be healed,9This man was listening to the words of Paul, who looked intently at him and saw that he had faith to be healed.
said with a loud voice, “Stand up straight on your feet!” And he leaped and walked.10In a loud voice Paul called out, “Stand up on your feet!” And the man jumped up and began to walk.
Now when the people saw what Paul had done, they raised their voices, saying in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!”11When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices in the Lycaonian language: “The gods have come down to us in human form!”
And Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.12Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.
Then the priest of Zeus, whose temple was in front of their city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, intending to sacrifice with the multitudes.13The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates, hoping to offer a sacrifice along with the crowds.
But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard this, they tore their clothes and ran in among the multitude, crying out14But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul found out about this, they tore their clothes and rushed into the crowd, shouting,
and saying, “Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men with the same nature as you, and preach to you that you should turn from these useless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all things that are in them,15“Men, why are you doing this? We too are only men, human like you. We are bringing you good news that you should turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and everything in them.
who in bygone generations allowed all nations to walk in their own ways.16In past generations, He let all nations go their own way.
Nevertheless He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good, gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.”17Yet He has not left Himself without testimony to His goodness: He gives you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling your hearts with food and gladness.”
And with these sayings they could scarcely restrain the multitudes from sacrificing to them.18Even with these words, Paul and Barnabas could hardly stop the crowds from sacrificing to them.
Then Jews from Antioch and Iconium came there; and having persuaded the multitudes, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing him to be dead.19Then some Jews arrived from Antioch and Iconium and won over the crowds. They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city, presuming he was dead.
However, when the disciples gathered around him, he rose up and went into the city. And the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.20But after the disciples had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. And the next day he left with Barnabas for Derbe.
And when they had preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch,21They preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch,
strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying, “We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God.”22strengthening the souls of the disciples and encouraging them to continue in the faith. “We must endure many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,” they said.
So when they had appointed elders in every church, and prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed.23Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church, praying and fasting as they entrusted them to the Lord, in whom they had believed.
And after they had passed through Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia.24After passing through Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia.
Now when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.25And when they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.
From there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work which they had completed.26From Attalia they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work they had just completed.
Now when they had come and gathered the church together, they reported all that God had done with them, and that He had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.27When they arrived, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them, and how He had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.
So they stayed there a long time with the disciples.28And they spent a long time there with the disciples.
