For the director of music. A psalm of David. In you, LORD, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; deliver me in your righteousness. | 1O LORD, I have come to you for protection; don’t let me be disgraced. Save me, for you do what is right. |
Turn your ear to me, come quickly to my rescue; be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me. | 2Turn your ear to listen to me; rescue me quickly. Be my rock of protection, a fortress where I will be safe. |
Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me. | 3You are my rock and my fortress. For the honor of your name, lead me out of this danger. |
Keep me free from the trap that is set for me, for you are my refuge. | 4Pull me from the trap my enemies set for me, for I find protection in you alone. |
Into your hands I commit my spirit; deliver me, LORD, my faithful God. | 5I entrust my spirit into your hand. Rescue me, LORD, for you are a faithful God. |
I hate those who cling to worthless idols; as for me, I trust in the LORD. | 6I hate those who worship worthless idols. I trust in the LORD. |
I will be glad and rejoice in your love, for you saw my affliction and knew the anguish of my soul. | 7I will be glad and rejoice in your unfailing love, for you have seen my troubles, and you care about the anguish of my soul. |
You have not given me into the hands of the enemy but have set my feet in a spacious place. | 8You have not handed me over to my enemies but have set me in a safe place. |
Be merciful to me, LORD, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and body with grief. | 9Have mercy on me, LORD, for I am in distress. Tears blur my eyes. My body and soul are withering away. |
My life is consumed by anguish and my years by groaning; my strength fails because of my affliction, and my bones grow weak. | 10I am dying from grief; my years are shortened by sadness. Sin has drained my strength; I am wasting away from within. |
Because of all my enemies, I am the utter contempt of my neighbors and an object of dread to my closest friends-- those who see me on the street flee from me. | 11I am scorned by all my enemies and despised by my neighbors— even my friends are afraid to come near me. When they see me on the street, they run the other way. |
I am forgotten as though I were dead; I have become like broken pottery. | 12I am ignored as if I were dead, as if I were a broken pot. |
For I hear many whispering, "Terror on every side!" They conspire against me and plot to take my life. | 13I have heard the many rumors about me, and I am surrounded by terror. My enemies conspire against me, plotting to take my life. |
But I trust in you, LORD; I say, "You are my God." | 14But I am trusting you, O LORD, saying, “You are my God!” |
My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me. | 15My future is in your hands. Rescue me from those who hunt me down relentlessly. |
Let your face shine on your servant; save me in your unfailing love. | 16Let your favor shine on your servant. In your unfailing love, rescue me. |
Let me not be put to shame, LORD, for I have cried out to you; but let the wicked be put to shame and be silent in the realm of the dead. | 17Don’t let me be disgraced, O LORD, for I call out to you for help. Let the wicked be disgraced; let them lie silent in the grave. |
Let their lying lips be silenced, for with pride and contempt they speak arrogantly against the righteous. | 18Silence their lying lips— those proud and arrogant lips that accuse the godly. |
How abundant are the good things that you have stored up for those who fear you, that you bestow in the sight of all, on those who take refuge in you. | 19How great is the goodness you have stored up for those who fear you. You lavish it on those who come to you for protection, blessing them before the watching world. |
In the shelter of your presence you hide them from all human intrigues; you keep them safe in your dwelling from accusing tongues. | 20You hide them in the shelter of your presence, safe from those who conspire against them. You shelter them in your presence, far from accusing tongues. |
Praise be to the LORD, for he showed me the wonders of his love when I was in a city under siege. | 21Praise the LORD, for he has shown me the wonders of his unfailing love. He kept me safe when my city was under attack. |
In my alarm I said, "I am cut off from your sight!" Yet you heard my cry for mercy when I called to you for help. | 22In panic I cried out, “I am cut off from the LORD!” But you heard my cry for mercy and answered my call for help. |
Love the LORD, all his faithful people! The LORD preserves those who are true to him, but the proud he pays back in full. | 23Love the LORD, all you godly ones! For the LORD protects those who are loyal to him, but he harshly punishes the arrogant. |
Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD. | 24So be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the LORD! |
