For the music director; according to the tune of "Lilies;" by David. Deliver me, O God, for the water has reached my neck. | 1Save me, O God, for the floodwaters are up to my neck. |
I sink into the deep mire where there is no solid ground; I am in deep water, and the current overpowers me. | 2Deeper and deeper I sink into the mire; I can’t find a foothold. I am in deep water, and the floods overwhelm me. |
I am exhausted from shouting for help; my throat is sore; my eyes grow tired of looking for my God. | 3I am exhausted from crying for help; my throat is parched. My eyes are swollen with weeping, waiting for my God to help me. |
Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than the hairs of my head. Those who want to destroy me, my enemies for no reason, outnumber me. They make me repay what I did not steal! | 4Those who hate me without cause outnumber the hairs on my head. Many enemies try to destroy me with lies, demanding that I give back what I didn’t steal. |
O God, you are aware of my foolish sins; my guilt is not hidden from you. | 5O God, you know how foolish I am; my sins cannot be hidden from you. |
Let none who rely on you be disgraced because of me, O sovereign LORD and king! Let none who seek you be ashamed because of me, O God of Israel! | 6Don’t let those who trust in you be ashamed because of me, O Sovereign LORD of Heaven’s Armies. Don’t let me cause them to be humiliated, O God of Israel. |
For I suffer humiliation for your sake and am thoroughly disgraced. | 7For I endure insults for your sake; humiliation is written all over my face. |
My own brothers treat me like a stranger; they act as if I were a foreigner. | 8Even my own brothers pretend they don’t know me; they treat me like a stranger. |
Certainly zeal for your house consumes me; I endure the insults of those who insult you. | 9Passion for your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me. |
I weep and refrain from eating food, which causes others to insult me. | 10When I weep and fast, they scoff at me. |
I wear sackcloth and they ridicule me. | 11When I dress in burlap to show sorrow, they make fun of me. |
Those who sit at the city gate gossip about me; drunkards mock me in their songs. | 12I am the favorite topic of town gossip, and all the drunks sing about me. |
O LORD, may you hear my prayer and be favorably disposed to me! O God, because of your great loyal love, answer me with your faithful deliverance! | 13But I keep praying to you, LORD, hoping this time you will show me favor. In your unfailing love, O God, answer my prayer with your sure salvation. |
Rescue me from the mud! Don't let me sink! Deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep water! | 14Rescue me from the mud; don’t let me sink any deeper! Save me from those who hate me, and pull me from these deep waters. |
Don't let the current overpower me! Don't let the deep swallow me up! Don't let the pit devour me! | 15Don’t let the floods overwhelm me, or the deep waters swallow me, or the pit of death devour me. |
Answer me, O LORD, for your loyal love is good! Because of your great compassion, turn toward me! | 16Answer my prayers, O LORD, for your unfailing love is wonderful. Take care of me, for your mercy is so plentiful. |
Do not ignore your servant, for I am in trouble! Answer me right away! | 17Don’t hide from your servant; answer me quickly, for I am in deep trouble! |
Come near me and redeem me! Because of my enemies, rescue me! | 18Come and redeem me; free me from my enemies. |
You know how I am insulted, humiliated and disgraced; you can see all my enemies. | 19You know of my shame, scorn, and disgrace. You see all that my enemies are doing. |
Their insults are painful and make me lose heart; I look for sympathy, but receive none, for comforters, but find none. | 20Their insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair. If only one person would show some pity; if only one would turn and comfort me. |
They put bitter poison into my food, and to quench my thirst they give me vinegar to drink. | 21But instead, they give me poison for food; they offer me sour wine for my thirst. |
May their dining table become a trap before them! May it be a snare for that group of friends! | 22Let the bountiful table set before them become a snare and their prosperity become a trap. |
May their eyes be blinded! Make them shake violently! | 23Let their eyes go blind so they cannot see, and make their bodies shake continually. |
Pour out your judgment on them! May your raging anger overtake them! | 24Pour out your fury on them; consume them with your burning anger. |
May their camp become desolate, their tents uninhabited! | 25Let their homes become desolate and their tents be deserted. |
For they harass the one whom you discipline; they spread the news about the suffering of those whom you punish. | 26To the one you have punished, they add insult to injury; they add to the pain of those you have hurt. |
Hold them accountable for all their sins! Do not vindicate them! | 27Pile their sins up high, and don’t let them go free. |
May their names be deleted from the scroll of the living! Do not let their names be listed with the godly! | 28Erase their names from the Book of Life; don’t let them be counted among the righteous. |
I am oppressed and suffering! O God, deliver and protect me! | 29I am suffering and in pain. Rescue me, O God, by your saving power. |
I will sing praises to God's name! I will magnify him as I give him thanks! | 30Then I will praise God’s name with singing, and I will honor him with thanksgiving. |
That will please the LORD more than an ox or a bull with horns and hooves. | 31For this will please the LORD more than sacrificing cattle, more than presenting a bull with its horns and hooves. |
The oppressed look on--let them rejoice! You who seek God, may you be encouraged! | 32The humble will see their God at work and be glad. Let all who seek God’s help be encouraged. |
For the LORD listens to the needy; he does not despise his captive people. | 33For the LORD hears the cries of the needy; he does not despise his imprisoned people. |
Let the heavens and the earth praise him, along with the seas and everything that swims in them! | 34Praise him, O heaven and earth, the seas and all that move in them. |
For God will deliver Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah, and his people will again live in them and possess Zion. | 35For God will save Jerusalem and rebuild the towns of Judah. His people will live there and settle in their own land. |
The descendants of his servants will inherit it, and those who are loyal to him will live in it. | 36The descendants of those who obey him will inherit the land, and those who love him will live there in safety. |
