For the music director; according to the tune of "Lilies;" by David. Deliver me, O God, for the water has reached my neck. | 1To the chief Musician upon Shoshannim, A Psalm of David. Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul. |
I sink into the deep mire where there is no solid ground; I am in deep water, and the current overpowers me. | 2I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me. |
I am exhausted from shouting for help; my throat is sore; my eyes grow tired of looking for my God. | 3I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God. |
Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than the hairs of my head. Those who want to destroy me, my enemies for no reason, outnumber me. They make me repay what I did not steal! | 4They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away. |
O God, you are aware of my foolish sins; my guilt is not hidden from you. | 5O God, thou knowest my foolishness; and my sins are not hid from thee. |
Let none who rely on you be disgraced because of me, O sovereign LORD and king! Let none who seek you be ashamed because of me, O God of Israel! | 6Let not them that wait on thee, O Lord GOD of hosts, be ashamed for my sake: let not those that seek thee be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel. |
For I suffer humiliation for your sake and am thoroughly disgraced. | 7Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face. |
My own brothers treat me like a stranger; they act as if I were a foreigner. | 8I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children. |
Certainly zeal for your house consumes me; I endure the insults of those who insult you. | 9For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me. |
I weep and refrain from eating food, which causes others to insult me. | 10When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach. |
I wear sackcloth and they ridicule me. | 11I made sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them. |
Those who sit at the city gate gossip about me; drunkards mock me in their songs. | 12They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards. |
O LORD, may you hear my prayer and be favorably disposed to me! O God, because of your great loyal love, answer me with your faithful deliverance! | 13But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O LORD, in an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation. |
Rescue me from the mud! Don't let me sink! Deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep water! | 14Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters. |
Don't let the current overpower me! Don't let the deep swallow me up! Don't let the pit devour me! | 15Let not the waterflood overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me. |
Answer me, O LORD, for your loyal love is good! Because of your great compassion, turn toward me! | 16Hear me, O LORD; for thy lovingkindness is good: turn unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies. |
Do not ignore your servant, for I am in trouble! Answer me right away! | 17And hide not thy face from thy servant; for I am in trouble: hear me speedily. |
Come near me and redeem me! Because of my enemies, rescue me! | 18Draw nigh unto my soul, and redeem it: deliver me because of mine enemies. |
You know how I am insulted, humiliated and disgraced; you can see all my enemies. | 19Thou hast known my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonour: mine adversaries are all before thee. |
Their insults are painful and make me lose heart; I look for sympathy, but receive none, for comforters, but find none. | 20Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none. |
They put bitter poison into my food, and to quench my thirst they give me vinegar to drink. | 21They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. |
May their dining table become a trap before them! May it be a snare for that group of friends! | 22Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap. |
May their eyes be blinded! Make them shake violently! | 23Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake. |
Pour out your judgment on them! May your raging anger overtake them! | 24Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them. |
May their camp become desolate, their tents uninhabited! | 25Let their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents. |
For they harass the one whom you discipline; they spread the news about the suffering of those whom you punish. | 26For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten; and they talk to the grief of those whom thou hast wounded. |
Hold them accountable for all their sins! Do not vindicate them! | 27Add iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into thy righteousness. |
May their names be deleted from the scroll of the living! Do not let their names be listed with the godly! | 28Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous. |
I am oppressed and suffering! O God, deliver and protect me! | 29But I am poor and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high. |
I will sing praises to God's name! I will magnify him as I give him thanks! | 30I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving. |
That will please the LORD more than an ox or a bull with horns and hooves. | 31This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs. |
The oppressed look on--let them rejoice! You who seek God, may you be encouraged! | 32The humble shall see this, and be glad: and your heart shall live that seek God. |
For the LORD listens to the needy; he does not despise his captive people. | 33For the LORD heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners. |
Let the heavens and the earth praise him, along with the seas and everything that swims in them! | 34Let the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moveth therein. |
For God will deliver Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah, and his people will again live in them and possess Zion. | 35For God will save Zion, and will build the cities of Judah: that they may dwell there, and have it in possession. |
The descendants of his servants will inherit it, and those who are loyal to him will live in it. | 36The seed also of his servants shall inherit it: and they that love his name shall dwell therein. |
