| 1The LORD said to Moses, "Cut out two tablets of stone like the first, and I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you smashed. | 1Then the LORD told Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones. I will write on them the same words that were on the tablets you smashed. |
| 2Be prepared in the morning, and go up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and station yourself for me there on the top of the mountain. | 2Be ready in the morning to climb up Mount Sinai and present yourself to me on the top of the mountain. |
| 3No one is to come up with you; do not let anyone be seen anywhere on the mountain; not even the flocks or the herds may graze in front of that mountain." | 3No one else may come with you. In fact, no one is to appear anywhere on the mountain. Do not even let the flocks or herds graze near the mountain.” |
| 4So Moses cut out two tablets of stone like the first; early in the morning he went up to Mount Sinai, just as the LORD had commanded him, and he took in his hand the two tablets of stone. | 4So Moses chiseled out two tablets of stone like the first ones. Early in the morning he climbed Mount Sinai as the LORD had commanded him, and he carried the two stone tablets in his hands. |
| 5The LORD descended in the cloud and stood with him there and proclaimed the LORD by name. | 5Then the LORD came down in a cloud and stood there with him; and he called out his own name, Yahweh. |
| 6The LORD passed by before him and proclaimed: "The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, and abounding in loyal love and faithfulness, | 6The LORD passed in front of Moses, calling out, “Yahweh! The LORD! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. |
| 7keeping loyal love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin. But he by no means leaves the guilty unpunished, responding to the transgression of fathers by dealing with children and children's children, to the third and fourth generation." | 7I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations.” |
| 8Moses quickly bowed to the ground and worshiped | 8Moses immediately threw himself to the ground and worshiped. |
| 9and said, "If now I have found favor in your sight, O Lord, let my Lord go among us, for we are a stiff-necked people; pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance." | 9And he said, “O Lord, if it is true that I have found favor with you, then please travel with us. Yes, this is a stubborn and rebellious people, but please forgive our iniquity and our sins. Claim us as your own special possession.” |
| 10He said, "See, I am going to make a covenant before all your people. I will do wonders such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation. All the people among whom you live will see the work of the LORD, for it is a fearful thing that I am doing with you. | 10The LORD replied, “Listen, I am making a covenant with you in the presence of all your people. I will perform miracles that have never been performed anywhere in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people around you will see the power of the LORD—the awesome power I will display for you. |
| 11"Obey what I am commanding you this day. I am going to drive out before you the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite. | 11But listen carefully to everything I command you today. Then I will go ahead of you and drive out the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. |
| 12Be careful not to make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you are going, lest it become a snare among you. | 12“Be very careful never to make a treaty with the people who live in the land where you are going. If you do, you will follow their evil ways and be trapped. |
| 13Rather you must destroy their altars, smash their images, and cut down their Asherah poles. | 13Instead, you must break down their pagan altars, smash their sacred pillars, and cut down their Asherah poles. |
| 14For you must not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God. | 14You must worship no other gods, for the LORD, whose very name is Jealous, is a God who is jealous about his relationship with you. |
| 15Be careful not to make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, for when they prostitute themselves to their gods and sacrifice to their gods, and someone invites you, you will eat from his sacrifice; | 15“You must not make a treaty of any kind with the people living in the land. They lust after their gods, offering sacrifices to them. They will invite you to join them in their sacrificial meals, and you will go with them. |
| 16and you then take his daughters for your sons, and when his daughters prostitute themselves to their gods, they will make your sons prostitute themselves to their gods as well. | 16Then you will accept their daughters, who sacrifice to other gods, as wives for your sons. And they will seduce your sons to commit adultery against me by worshiping other gods. |
| 17You must not make yourselves molten gods. | 17You must not make any gods of molten metal for yourselves. |
| 18"You must keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread. For seven days you must eat bread made without yeast, as I commanded you; do this at the appointed time of the month Abib, for in the month Abib you came out of Egypt. | 18“You must celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread. For seven days the bread you eat must be made without yeast, just as I commanded you. Celebrate this festival annually at the appointed time in early spring, in the month of Abib, for that is the anniversary of your departure from Egypt. |
| 19"Every firstborn of the womb belongs to me, even every firstborn of your cattle that is a male, whether ox or sheep. | 19“The firstborn of every animal belongs to me, including the firstborn males from your herds of cattle and your flocks of sheep and goats. |
| 20Now the firstling of a donkey you may redeem with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, then break its neck. You must redeem all the firstborn of your sons. "No one will appear before me empty-handed. | 20A firstborn donkey may be bought back from the LORD by presenting a lamb or young goat in its place. But if you do not buy it back, you must break its neck. However, you must buy back every firstborn son. “No one may appear before me without an offering. |
| 21"On six days you may labor, but on the seventh day you must rest; even at the time of plowing and of harvest you are to rest. | 21“You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but on the seventh day you must stop working, even during the seasons of plowing and harvest. |
| 22"You must observe the Feast of Weeks--the firstfruits of the harvest of wheat--and the Feast of Ingathering at the end of the year. | 22“You must celebrate the Festival of Harvest with the first crop of the wheat harvest, and celebrate the Festival of the Final Harvest at the end of the harvest season. |
| 23At three times in the year all your men must appear before the Lord GOD, the God of Israel. | 23Three times each year every man in Israel must appear before the Sovereign, the LORD, the God of Israel. |
| 24For I will drive out the nations before you and enlarge your borders; no one will covet your land when you go up to appear before the LORD your God three times in the year. | 24I will drive out the other nations ahead of you and expand your territory, so no one will covet and conquer your land while you appear before the LORD your God three times each year. |
| 25"You must not offer the blood of my sacrifice with yeast; the sacrifice from the feast of Passover must not remain until the following morning. | 25“You must not offer the blood of my sacrificial offerings together with any baked goods containing yeast. And none of the meat of the Passover sacrifice may be kept over until the next morning. |
| 26"The first of the firstfruits of your soil you must bring to the house of the LORD your God. You must not cook a young goat in its mother's milk." | 26“As you harvest your crops, bring the very best of the first harvest to the house of the LORD your God. “You must not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.” |
| 27The LORD said to Moses, "Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel." | 27Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write down all these instructions, for they represent the terms of the covenant I am making with you and with Israel.” |
| 28So he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did not eat bread, and he did not drink water. He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the ten commandments. | 28Moses remained there on the mountain with the LORD forty days and forty nights. In all that time he ate no bread and drank no water. And the LORD wrote the terms of the covenant—the Ten Commandments —on the stone tablets. |
| 29Now when Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand--when he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him. | 29When Moses came down Mount Sinai carrying the two stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant, he wasn’t aware that his face had become radiant because he had spoken to the LORD. |
| 30When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to approach him. | 30So when Aaron and the people of Israel saw the radiance of Moses’ face, they were afraid to come near him. |
| 31But Moses called to them, so Aaron and all the leaders of the community came back to him, and Moses spoke to them. | 31But Moses called out to them and asked Aaron and all the leaders of the community to come over, and he talked with them. |
| 32After this all the Israelites approached, and he commanded them all that the LORD had spoken to him on Mount Sinai. | 32Then all the people of Israel approached him, and Moses gave them all the instructions the LORD had given him on Mount Sinai. |
| 33When Moses finished speaking with them, he would put a veil on his face. | 33When Moses finished speaking with them, he covered his face with a veil. |
| 34But when Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he would remove the veil until he came out. Then he would come out and tell the Israelites what he had been commanded. | 34But whenever he went into the Tent of Meeting to speak with the LORD, he would remove the veil until he came out again. Then he would give the people whatever instructions the LORD had given him, |
| 35When the Israelites would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses' face shone, Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with the LORD. | 35and the people of Israel would see the radiant glow of his face. So he would put the veil over his face until he returned to speak with the LORD. |
