Then Moses called all the people of Israel together and said to them: "Listen, Israel, to the statutes and ordinances that I am about to deliver to you today; learn them and be careful to keep them! | 1Then Moses summoned all Israel and said to them: "Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the ordinances which I am speaking today in your hearing, that you may learn them and observe them carefully. |
The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. | 2"The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. |
He did not make this covenant with our ancestors but with us, we who are here today, all of us living now. | 3"The LORD did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, with all those of us alive here today. |
The LORD spoke face to face with you at the mountain, from the middle of the fire. | 4"The LORD spoke to you face to face at the mountain from the midst of the fire, |
(I was standing between the LORD and you at that time to reveal to you the message of the LORD, because you were afraid of the fire and would not go up the mountain.) He said: | 5while I was standing between the LORD and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the LORD; for you were afraid because of the fire and did not go up the mountain. He said, |
"I am the LORD your God, he who brought you from the land of Egypt, from the place of slavery. | 6'I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. |
You must not have any other gods besides me. | 7'You shall have no other gods before Me. |
You must not make for yourself an image of anything in heaven above, on earth below, or in the waters beneath. | 8You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. |
You must not worship or serve them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God. I punish the sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons for the sin of the fathers who reject me, | 9You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, |
but I show covenant faithfulness to the thousands who choose me and keep my commandments. | 10but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. |
You must not make use of the name of the LORD your God for worthless purposes, for the LORD will not exonerate anyone who abuses his name that way. | 11'You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain. |
Be careful to observe the Sabbath day just as the LORD your God has commanded you. | 12'Observe the sabbath day to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you. |
You are to work and do all your tasks in six days, | 13'Six days you shall labor and do all your work, |
but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. On that day you must not do any work, you, your son, your daughter, your male slave, your female slave, your ox, your donkey, any other animal, or the foreigner who lives with you, so that your male and female slaves, like yourself, may have rest. | 14but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant or your ox or your donkey or any of your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you, so that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. |
Recall that you were slaves in the land of Egypt and that the LORD your God brought you out of there by strength and power. That is why the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day. | 15'You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out of there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to observe the sabbath day. |
Honor your father and your mother just as the LORD your God has commanded you to do, so that your days may be extended and that it may go well with you in the land that he is about to give you. | 16'Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, that your days may be prolonged and that it may go well with you on the land which the LORD your God gives you. |
You must not murder. | 17'You shall not murder. |
You must not commit adultery. | 18'You shall not commit adultery. |
You must not steal. | 19'You shall not steal. |
You must not offer false testimony against another. | 20'You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. |
You must not desire another man's wife, nor should you crave his house, his field, his male and female servants, his ox, his donkey, or anything else he owns." | 21'You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, and you shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field or his male servant or his female servant, his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.' |
The LORD said these things to your entire assembly at the mountain from the middle of the fire, the cloud, and the darkness with a loud voice, and that was all he said. Then he inscribed the words on two stone tablets and gave them to me. | 22"These words the LORD spoke to all your assembly at the mountain from the midst of the fire, of the cloud and of the thick gloom, with a great voice, and He added no more. He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. |
Then, when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness while the mountain was ablaze, all your tribal leaders and elders approached me. | 23"And when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes and your elders. |
You said, "The LORD our God has shown us his great glory and we have heard him speak from the middle of the fire. It is now clear to us that God can speak to human beings and they can keep on living. | 24"You said, 'Behold, the LORD our God has shown us His glory and His greatness, and we have heard His voice from the midst of the fire; we have seen today that God speaks with man, yet he lives. |
But now, why should we die, because this intense fire will consume us! If we keep hearing the voice of the LORD our God we will die! | 25'Now then why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any longer, then we will die. |
Who is there from the entire human race who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the middle of the fire as we have, and has lived? | 26For who is there of all flesh who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived? |
You go near so that you can hear everything the LORD our God is saying and then you can tell us whatever he says to you; then we will pay attention and do it." | 27Go near and hear all that the LORD our God says; then speak to us all that the LORD our God speaks to you, and we will hear and do it.' |
When the LORD heard you speaking to me, he said to me, "I have heard what these people have said to you--they have spoken well. | 28"The LORD heard the voice of your words when you spoke to me, and the LORD said to me, 'I have heard the voice of the words of this people which they have spoken to you. They have done well in all that they have spoken. |
If only it would really be their desire to fear me and obey all my commandments in the future, so that it may go well with them and their descendants forever. | 29'Oh that they had such a heart in them, that they would fear Me and keep all My commandments always, that it may be well with them and with their sons forever! |
Go and tell them, 'Return to your tents!' | 30'Go, say to them, "Return to your tents." |
But as for you, remain here with me so I can declare to you all the commandments, statutes, and ordinances that you are to teach them, so that they can carry them out in the land I am about to give them." | 31But as for you, stand here by Me, that I may speak to you all the commandments and the statutes and the judgments which you shall teach them, that they may observe them in the land which I give them to possess.' |
Be careful, therefore, to do exactly what the LORD your God has commanded you; do not turn right or left! | 32"So you shall observe to do just as the LORD your God has commanded you; you shall not turn aside to the right or to the left. |
Walk just as he has commanded you so that you may live, that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land you are going to possess. | 33"You shall walk in all the way which the LORD your God has commanded you, that you may live and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you will possess. |
