A song, a psalm of Asaph. O God, do not be silent! Do not ignore us! Do not be inactive, O God! | 1God, do not rest! Don't be silent! Don't stay inactive, God! |
For look, your enemies are making a commotion; those who hate you are hostile. | 2See! Your enemies rage; those who hate you issue threats. |
They carefully plot against your people, and make plans to harm the ones you cherish. | 3They plot against your people and conspire against your cherished ones. |
They say, "Come on, let's annihilate them so they are no longer a nation! Then the name of Israel will be remembered no more." | 4They say, "Let us go and erase them as a nation so the name of Israel will not be remembered anymore." |
Yes, they devise a unified strategy; they form an alliance against you. | 5Indeed, they shrewdly planned together, forming an alliance against you— |
It includes the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites, | 6the tents of Edom, the Ishmaelites, Moab, the Hagrites, |
Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek, Philistia and the inhabitants of Tyre. | 7Gebal, Ammon, Amalek, Philistia, and the inhabitants of Tyre. |
Even Assyria has allied with them, lending its strength to the descendants of Lot. (Selah) | 8Even Assyria joined them to strengthen the descendants of Lot. Interlude |
Do to them as you did to Midian--as you did to Sisera and Jabin at the Kishon River! | 9Deal with them as you did to Midian, Sisera, and Jabin at the Kishon Brook. |
They were destroyed at Endor; their corpses were like manure on the ground. | 10They were destroyed at En-dor and became as dung on the ground. |
Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, and all their rulers like Zebah and Zalmunna, | 11Punish their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, and all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna, |
who said, "Let's take over the pastures of God!" | 12who said, "Let us possess the pastures of God." |
O my God, make them like dead thistles, like dead weeds blown away by the wind! | 13God, set them up like dried thistles, like straw before the wind. |
Like the fire that burns down the forest, or the flames that consume the mountainsides, | 14Like a fire burning a forest, and a flame setting mountains ablaze. |
chase them with your gale winds, and terrify them with your windstorm. | 15Pursue them with your storm and terrify them with your whirlwind. |
Cover their faces with shame, so they might seek you, O LORD. | 16Fill their faces with shame until they seek your name, God. |
May they be humiliated and continually terrified! May they die in shame! | 17Let them be humiliated and terrified permanently until they die in shame. |
Then they will know that you alone are the LORD, the sovereign king over all the earth. | 18Then they will know that you alone— whose name is LORD— are the Most High over all the earth. |
