A song, a psalm of Asaph. O God, do not be silent! Do not ignore us! Do not be inactive, O God! | 1God, do not keep silent. Do not be deaf, God; do not be quiet. |
For look, your enemies are making a commotion; those who hate you are hostile. | 2See how your enemies make an uproar; those who hate you have acted arrogantly. |
They carefully plot against your people, and make plans to harm the ones you cherish. | 3They devise clever schemes against your people; they conspire against your treasured ones. |
They say, "Come on, let's annihilate them so they are no longer a nation! Then the name of Israel will be remembered no more." | 4They say, "Come, let us wipe them out as a nation so that Israel's name will no longer be remembered." |
Yes, they devise a unified strategy; they form an alliance against you. | 5For they have conspired with one mind; they form an alliance against you-- |
It includes the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites, | 6the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites, |
Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek, Philistia and the inhabitants of Tyre. | 7Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek, Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre. |
Even Assyria has allied with them, lending its strength to the descendants of Lot. (Selah) | 8Even Assyria has joined them; they lend support to the sons of Lot. Selah |
Do to them as you did to Midian--as you did to Sisera and Jabin at the Kishon River! | 9Deal with them as you did with Midian, as you did with Sisera and Jabin at the Kishon River. |
They were destroyed at Endor; their corpses were like manure on the ground. | 10They were destroyed at En-dor; they became manure for the ground. |
Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, and all their rulers like Zebah and Zalmunna, | 11Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, and all their tribal leaders like Zebah and Zalmunna, |
who said, "Let's take over the pastures of God!" | 12who said, "Let us seize God's pastures for ourselves." |
O my God, make them like dead thistles, like dead weeds blown away by the wind! | 13Make them like tumbleweed, my God, like straw before the wind. |
Like the fire that burns down the forest, or the flames that consume the mountainsides, | 14As fire burns a forest, as a flame blazes through mountains, |
chase them with your gale winds, and terrify them with your windstorm. | 15so pursue them with your tempest and terrify them with your storm. |
Cover their faces with shame, so they might seek you, O LORD. | 16Cover their faces with shame so that they will seek your name, LORD. |
May they be humiliated and continually terrified! May they die in shame! | 17Let them be put to shame and terrified forever; let them perish in disgrace. |
Then they will know that you alone are the LORD, the sovereign king over all the earth. | 18May they know that you alone--whose name is the LORD--are the Most High over the whole earth. |
