Next we set out on the route to Bashan, but King Og of Bashan and his whole army came out to meet us in battle at Edrei. | 1Then we turned and went up the road to Bashan, and Og king of Bashan came out against us with his whole army to do battle at Edrei. |
The LORD, however, said to me, "Don't be afraid of him because I have already given him, his whole army, and his land to you. You will do to him exactly what you did to King Sihon of the Amorites who lived in Heshbon." | 2But the LORD said to me, 'Do not fear him, for I have handed him over to you along with his whole army and his land. Do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.' |
So the LORD our God did indeed give over to us King Og of Bashan and his whole army and we struck them down until not a single survivor was left. | 3So the LORD our God also handed over Og king of Bashan and his whole army to us. We struck him until there was no survivor left. |
We captured all his cities at that time--there was not a town we did not take from them--sixty cities, all the region of Argob, the dominion of Og in Bashan. | 4We captured all his cities at that time. There wasn't a city that we didn't take from them: 60 cities, the entire region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. |
All of these cities were fortified by high walls, gates, and locking bars; in addition there were a great many open villages. | 5All these were fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides a large number of rural villages. |
We put all of these under divine judgment just as we had done to King Sihon of Heshbon--every occupied city, including women and children. | 6We completely destroyed them, as we had done to Sihon king of Heshbon, destroying the men, women, and children of every city. |
But all the livestock and plunder from the cities we kept for ourselves. | 7But we took all the livestock and the spoil from the cities as plunder for ourselves." |
So at that time we took the land of the two Amorite kings in the Transjordan from Wadi Arnon to Mount Hermon | 8At that time we took the land from the two Amorite kings across the Jordan, from the Arnon Valley as far as Mount Hermon, |
(the Sidonians call Hermon Sirion and the Amorites call it Senir), | 9which the Sidonians call Sirion, but the Amorites call Senir, |
all the cities of the plateau, all of Gilead and Bashan as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. | 10all the cities of the plateau, Gilead, and Bashan as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities of Og's kingdom in Bashan. |
Only King Og of Bashan was left of the remaining Rephaites. (It is noteworthy that his sarcophagus was made of iron. Does it not, indeed, still remain in Rabbath of the Ammonites? It is thirteen and a half feet long and six feet wide according to standard measure.) | 11(Only Og king of Bashan was left of the remnant of the Rephaim. His bed was made of iron. Isn't it in Rabbah of the Ammonites? It is 13 feet six inches long and six feet wide by a standard measure.)" |
This is the land we brought under our control at that time: The territory extending from Aroer by the Wadi Arnon and half the Gilead hill country with its cities I gave to the Reubenites and Gadites. | 12At that time we took possession of this land. I gave to the Reubenites and Gadites the area extending from Aroer by the Arnon Valley, and half the hill country of Gilead along with its cities. |
The rest of Gilead and all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to half the tribe of Manasseh. (All the region of Argob, that is, all Bashan, is called the land of Rephaim. | 13I gave to half the tribe of Manasseh the rest of Gilead and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og. The entire region of Argob, the whole territory of Bashan, used to be called the land of the Rephaim. |
Jair, son of Manasseh, took all the Argob region as far as the border with the Geshurites and Maacathites (namely Bashan) and called it by his name, Havvoth-Jair, which it retains to this very day.) | 14Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, took over the entire region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and Maacathites. He called Bashan by his own name, Jair's Villages, as it is today. |
I gave Gilead to Machir. | 15I gave Gilead to Machir, |
To the Reubenites and Gadites I allocated the territory extending from Gilead as far as Wadi Arnon (the exact middle of the wadi was a boundary) all the way to the Wadi Jabbok, the Ammonite border. | 16and I gave to the Reubenites and Gadites the area extending from Gilead to the Arnon Valley (the middle of the valley was the border) and up to the Jabbok River, the border of the Ammonites. |
The Arabah and the Jordan River were also a border, from the sea of Chinnereth to the sea of the Arabah (that is, the Salt Sea), beneath the watershed of Pisgah to the east. | 17The Arabah and Jordan are also borders from Chinnereth as far as the Sea of the Arabah, the Dead Sea, under the slopes of Pisgah on the east." |
At that time I instructed you as follows: "The LORD your God has given you this land for your possession. You warriors are to cross over before your fellow Israelites equipped for battle. | 18I commanded you at that time: The LORD your God has given you this land to possess. All your fighting men will cross over in battle formation ahead of your brothers the Israelites. |
But your wives, children, and livestock (of which I know you have many) may remain in the cities I have given you. | 19But your wives, young children, and livestock--I know that you have a lot of livestock--will remain in the cities I have given you |
You must fight until the LORD gives your countrymen victory as he did you and they take possession of the land that the LORD your God is giving them on the other side of the Jordan River. Then each of you may return to his own territory that I have given you." | 20until the LORD gives rest to your brothers as He has to you, and they also take possession of the land the LORD your God is giving them across the Jordan. Then each of you may return to his possession that I have given you." |
I also commanded Joshua at the same time, "You have seen everything the LORD your God did to these two kings; he will do the same to all the kingdoms where you are going. | 21I commanded Joshua at that time: Your own eyes have seen everything the LORD your God has done to these two kings. The LORD will do the same to all the kingdoms you are about to enter. |
Do not be afraid of them, for the LORD your God will personally fight for you." | 22Don't be afraid of them, for the LORD your God fights for you." |
Moreover, at that time I pleaded with the LORD, | 23At that time I begged the LORD: |
"O, Lord GOD, you have begun to show me your greatness and strength. (What god in heaven or earth can rival your works and mighty deeds?) | 24Lord GOD, You have begun to show Your greatness and power to Your servant, for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can perform deeds and mighty acts like Yours? |
Let me please cross over to see the good land on the other side of the Jordan River--this good hill country and the Lebanon!" | 25Please let me cross over and see the beautiful land on the other side of the Jordan, that good hill country and Lebanon." |
But the LORD was angry at me because of you and would not listen to me. Instead, he said to me, "Enough of that! Do not speak to me anymore about this matter. | 26But the LORD was angry with me on account of you and would not listen to me. The LORD said to me, 'That's enough! Do not speak to Me again about this matter. |
Go up to the top of Pisgah and take a good look to the west, north, south, and east, for you will not be allowed to cross the Jordan. | 27Go to the top of Pisgah and look to the west, north, south, and east, and see it with your own eyes, for you will not cross this Jordan. |
Commission Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, because he will lead these people over and will enable them to inherit the land you will see." | 28But commission Joshua and encourage and strengthen him, for he will cross over ahead of the people and enable them to inherit this land that you will see.' |
So we settled down in the valley opposite Beth Peor. | 29So we stayed in the valley facing Beth-peor." |
