Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the ninth hour, the hour of prayer. | 1Peter and John went to the Temple one afternoon to take part in the three o’clock prayer service. |
And a man who had been lame from his mother's womb was being carried along, whom they used to set down every day at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, in order to beg alms of those who were entering the temple. | 2As they approached the Temple, a man lame from birth was being carried in. Each day he was put beside the Temple gate, the one called the Beautiful Gate, so he could beg from the people going into the Temple. |
When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he began asking to receive alms. | 3When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for some money. |
But Peter, along with John, fixed his gaze on him and said, "Look at us!" | 4Peter and John looked at him intently, and Peter said, “Look at us!” |
And he began to give them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. | 5The lame man looked at them eagerly, expecting some money. |
But Peter said, "I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene-- walk!" | 6But Peter said, “I don’t have any silver or gold for you. But I’ll give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!” |
And seizing him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and his ankles were strengthened. | 7Then Peter took the lame man by the right hand and helped him up. And as he did, the man’s feet and ankles were instantly healed and strengthened. |
With a leap he stood upright and began to walk; and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. | 8He jumped up, stood on his feet, and began to walk! Then, walking, leaping, and praising God, he went into the Temple with them. |
And all the people saw him walking and praising God; | 9All the people saw him walking and heard him praising God. |
and they were taking note of him as being the one who used to sit at the Beautiful Gate of the temple to beg alms, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. | 10When they realized he was the lame beggar they had seen so often at the Beautiful Gate, they were absolutely astounded! |
While he was clinging to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them at the so-called portico of Solomon, full of amazement. | 11They all rushed out in amazement to Solomon’s Colonnade, where the man was holding tightly to Peter and John. Peter Preaches in the Temple |
But when Peter saw this, he replied to the people, "Men of Israel, why are you amazed at this, or why do you gaze at us, as if by our own power or piety we had made him walk? | 12Peter saw his opportunity and addressed the crowd. “People of Israel,” he said, “what is so surprising about this? And why stare at us as though we had made this man walk by our own power or godliness? |
"The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His servant Jesus, the one whom you delivered and disowned in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release Him. | 13For it is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—the God of all our ancestors—who has brought glory to his servant Jesus by doing this. This is the same Jesus whom you handed over and rejected before Pilate, despite Pilate’s decision to release him. |
"But you disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, | 14You rejected this holy, righteous one and instead demanded the release of a murderer. |
but put to death the Prince of life, the one whom God raised from the dead, a fact to which we are witnesses. | 15You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. And we are witnesses of this fact! |
"And on the basis of faith in His name, it is the name of Jesus which has strengthened this man whom you see and know; and the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect health in the presence of you all. | 16“Through faith in the name of Jesus, this man was healed—and you know how crippled he was before. Faith in Jesus’ name has healed him before your very eyes. |
"And now, brethren, I know that you acted in ignorance, just as your rulers did also. | 17“Friends, I realize that what you and your leaders did to Jesus was done in ignorance. |
"But the things which God announced beforehand by the mouth of all the prophets, that His Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled. | 18But God was fulfilling what all the prophets had foretold about the Messiah—that he must suffer these things. |
"Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord; | 19Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away. |
and that He may send Jesus, the Christ appointed for you, | 20Then times of refreshment will come from the presence of the Lord, and he will again send you Jesus, your appointed Messiah. |
whom heaven must receive until the period of restoration of all things about which God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from ancient time. | 21For he must remain in heaven until the time for the final restoration of all things, as God promised long ago through his holy prophets. |
"Moses said, 'THE LORD GOD WILL RAISE UP FOR YOU A PROPHET LIKE ME FROM YOUR BRETHREN; TO HIM YOU SHALL GIVE HEED to everything He says to you. | 22Moses said, ‘The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from among your own people. Listen carefully to everything he tells you.’ |
'And it will be that every soul that does not heed that prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.' | 23Then Moses said, ‘Anyone who will not listen to that Prophet will be completely cut off from God’s people.’ |
"And likewise, all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and his successors onward, also announced these days. | 24“Starting with Samuel, every prophet spoke about what is happening today. |
"It is you who are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant which God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, 'AND IN YOUR SEED ALL THE FAMILIES OF THE EARTH SHALL BE BLESSED.' | 25You are the children of those prophets, and you are included in the covenant God promised to your ancestors. For God said to Abraham, ‘Through your descendants all the families on earth will be blessed.’ |
"For you first, God raised up His Servant and sent Him to bless you by turning every one of you from your wicked ways." | 26When God raised up his servant, Jesus, he sent him first to you people of Israel, to bless you by turning each of you back from your sinful ways.” |
