He entered again into a synagogue; and a man was there whose hand was withered. | 1Another time Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. |
They were watching Him to see if He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him. | 2Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. |
He said to the man with the withered hand, "Get up and come forward!" | 3Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Stand up in front of everyone." |
And He said to them, "Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to kill?" But they kept silent. | 4Then Jesus asked them, "Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?" But they remained silent. |
After looking around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, He said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored. | 5He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. |
The Pharisees went out and immediately began conspiring with the Herodians against Him, as to how they might destroy Him. | 6Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus. |
Jesus withdrew to the sea with His disciples; and a great multitude from Galilee followed; and also from Judea, | 7Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed. |
and from Jerusalem, and from Idumea, and beyond the Jordan, and the vicinity of Tyre and Sidon, a great number of people heard of all that He was doing and came to Him. | 8When they heard about all he was doing, many people came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon. |
And He told His disciples that a boat should stand ready for Him because of the crowd, so that they would not crowd Him; | 9Because of the crowd he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, to keep the people from crowding him. |
for He had healed many, with the result that all those who had afflictions pressed around Him in order to touch Him. | 10For he had healed many, so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him. |
Whenever the unclean spirits saw Him, they would fall down before Him and shout, "You are the Son of God!" | 11Whenever the impure spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, "You are the Son of God." |
And He earnestly warned them not to tell who He was. | 12But he gave them strict orders not to tell others about him. |
And He went up on the mountain and summoned those whom He Himself wanted, and they came to Him. | 13Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. |
And He appointed twelve, so that they would be with Him and that He could send them out to preach, | 14He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach |
and to have authority to cast out the demons. | 15and to have authority to drive out demons. |
And He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom He gave the name Peter), | 16These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter), |
and James, the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James (to them He gave the name Boanerges, which means, "Sons of Thunder "); | 17James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means "sons of thunder"), |
and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot; | 18Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot |
and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Him. | 19and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. |
And He came home, and the crowd gathered again, to such an extent that they could not even eat a meal. | 20Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat. |
When His own people heard of this, they went out to take custody of Him; for they were saying, "He has lost His senses." | 21When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, "He is out of his mind." |
The scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, "He is possessed by Beelzebul," and "He casts out the demons by the ruler of the demons." | 22And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, "He is possessed by Beelzebul! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons." |
And He called them to Himself and began speaking to them in parables, "How can Satan cast out Satan? | 23So Jesus called them over to him and began to speak to them in parables: "How can Satan drive out Satan? |
"If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. | 24If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. |
"If a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. | 25If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. |
"If Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but he is finished! | 26And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come. |
"But no one can enter the strong man's house and plunder his property unless he first binds the strong man, and then he will plunder his house. | 27In fact, no one can enter a strong man's house without first tying him up. Then he can plunder the strong man's house. |
"Truly I say to you, all sins shall be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter; | 28Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, |
but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin "-- | 29but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin." |
because they were saying, "He has an unclean spirit." | 30He said this because they were saying, "He has an impure spirit." |
Then His mother and His brothers arrived, and standing outside they sent word to Him and called Him. | 31Then Jesus' mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. |
A crowd was sitting around Him, and they said to Him, "Behold, Your mother and Your brothers are outside looking for You." | 32A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, "Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you." |
Answering them, He said, "Who are My mother and My brothers?" | 33"Who are my mother and my brothers?" he asked. |
Looking about at those who were sitting around Him, He said, "Behold My mother and My brothers! | 34Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, "Here are my mother and my brothers! |
"For whoever does the will of God, he is My brother and sister and mother." | 35Whoever does God's will is my brother and sister and mother." |
