| 1"Do you know the time the mountain goats give birth? Do you observe the calving of the deer? | 1"Do you know when the mountain goats give birth? Do you watch when the doe bears her fawn? |
| 2"Can you count the months they fulfill, Or do you know the time they give birth? | 2Do you count the months till they bear? Do you know the time they give birth? |
| 3"They kneel down, they bring forth their young, They get rid of their labor pains. | 3They crouch down and bring forth their young; their labor pains are ended. |
| 4"Their offspring become strong, they grow up in the open field; They leave and do not return to them. | 4Their young thrive and grow strong in the wilds; they leave and do not return. |
| 5"Who sent out the wild donkey free? And who loosed the bonds of the swift donkey, | 5"Who let the wild donkey go free? Who untied its ropes? |
| 6To whom I gave the wilderness for a home And the salt land for his dwelling place? | 6I gave it the wasteland as its home, the salt flats as its habitat. |
| 7"He scorns the tumult of the city, The shoutings of the driver he does not hear. | 7It laughs at the commotion in the town; it does not hear a driver's shout. |
| 8"He explores the mountains for his pasture And searches after every green thing. | 8It ranges the hills for its pasture and searches for any green thing. |
| 9"Will the wild ox consent to serve you, Or will he spend the night at your manger? | 9"Will the wild ox consent to serve you? Will it stay by your manger at night? |
| 10"Can you bind the wild ox in a furrow with ropes, Or will he harrow the valleys after you? | 10Can you hold it to the furrow with a harness? Will it till the valleys behind you? |
| 11"Will you trust him because his strength is great And leave your labor to him? | 11Will you rely on it for its great strength? Will you leave your heavy work to it? |
| 12"Will you have faith in him that he will return your grain And gather it from your threshing floor? | 12Can you trust it to haul in your grain and bring it to your threshing floor? |
| 13"The ostriches' wings flap joyously With the pinion and plumage of love, | 13"The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully, though they cannot compare with the wings and feathers of the stork. |
| 14For she abandons her eggs to the earth And warms them in the dust, | 14She lays her eggs on the ground and lets them warm in the sand, |
| 15And she forgets that a foot may crush them, Or that a wild beast may trample them. | 15unmindful that a foot may crush them, that some wild animal may trample them. |
| 16"She treats her young cruelly, as if they were not hers; Though her labor be in vain, she is unconcerned; | 16She treats her young harshly, as if they were not hers; she cares not that her labor was in vain, |
| 17Because God has made her forget wisdom, And has not given her a share of understanding. | 17for God did not endow her with wisdom or give her a share of good sense. |
| 18"When she lifts herself on high, She laughs at the horse and his rider. | 18Yet when she spreads her feathers to run, she laughs at horse and rider. |
| 19"Do you give the horse his might? Do you clothe his neck with a mane? | 19"Do you give the horse its strength or clothe its neck with a flowing mane? |
| 20"Do you make him leap like the locust? His majestic snorting is terrible. | 20Do you make it leap like a locust, striking terror with its proud snorting? |
| 21"He paws in the valley, and rejoices in his strength; He goes out to meet the weapons. | 21It paws fiercely, rejoicing in its strength, and charges into the fray. |
| 22"He laughs at fear and is not dismayed; And he does not turn back from the sword. | 22It laughs at fear, afraid of nothing; it does not shy away from the sword. |
| 23"The quiver rattles against him, The flashing spear and javelin. | 23The quiver rattles against its side, along with the flashing spear and lance. |
| 24"With shaking and rage he races over the ground, And he does not stand still at the voice of the trumpet. | 24In frenzied excitement it eats up the ground; it cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds. |
| 25"As often as the trumpet sounds he says, 'Aha!' And he scents the battle from afar, And the thunder of the captains and the war cry. | 25At the blast of the trumpet it snorts, 'Aha!' It catches the scent of battle from afar, the shout of commanders and the battle cry. |
| 26"Is it by your understanding that the hawk soars, Stretching his wings toward the south? | 26"Does the hawk take flight by your wisdom and spread its wings toward the south? |
| 27"Is it at your command that the eagle mounts up And makes his nest on high? | 27Does the eagle soar at your command and build its nest on high? |
| 28"On the cliff he dwells and lodges, Upon the rocky crag, an inaccessible place. | 28It dwells on a cliff and stays there at night; a rocky crag is its stronghold. |
| 29"From there he spies out food; His eyes see it from afar. | 29From there it looks for food; its eyes detect it from afar. |
| 30"His young ones also suck up blood; And where the slain are, there is he." | 30Its young ones feast on blood, and where the slain are, there it is." |
