1It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do.1Πιστὸς ὁ λόγος εἴ τις ἐπισκοπῆς ὀρέγεται καλοῦ ἔργου ἐπιθυμεῖ
2An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,2δεῖ οὖν τὸν ἐπίσκοπον ἀνεπίλημπτον εἶναι μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρα νηφάλιον σώφρονα κόσμιον φιλόξενον διδακτικόν
3not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money.3μὴ πάροινον μὴ πλήκτην ἀλλὰ ἐπιεικῆ ἄμαχον ἀφιλάργυρον
4He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity4τοῦ ἰδίου οἴκου καλῶς προϊστάμενον τέκνα ἔχοντα ἐν ὑποταγῇ μετὰ πάσης σεμνότητος
5(but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?),5εἰ δέ τις τοῦ ἰδίου οἴκου προστῆναι οὐκ οἶδεν πῶς ἐκκλησίας Θεοῦ ἐπιμελήσεται
6and not a new convert, so that he will not become conceited and fall into the condemnation incurred by the devil.6μὴ νεόφυτον ἵνα μὴ τυφωθεὶς εἰς κρίμα ἐμπέσῃ τοῦ διαβόλου
7And he must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he will not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.7δεῖ δὲ καὶ μαρτυρίαν καλὴν ἔχειν ἀπὸ τῶν ἔξωθεν ἵνα μὴ εἰς ὀνειδισμὸν ἐμπέσῃ καὶ παγίδα τοῦ διαβόλου
8Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not double-tongued, or addicted to much wine or fond of sordid gain,8Διακόνους ὡσαύτως σεμνούς μὴ διλόγους μὴ οἴνῳ πολλῷ προσέχοντας μὴ αἰσχροκερδεῖς
9but holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.9ἔχοντας τὸ μυστήριον τῆς πίστεως ἐν καθαρᾷ συνειδήσει
10These men must also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons if they are beyond reproach.10καὶ οὗτοι δὲ δοκιμαζέσθωσαν πρῶτον εἶτα διακονείτωσαν ἀνέγκλητοι ὄντες
11Women must likewise be dignified, not malicious gossips, but temperate, faithful in all things.11Γυναῖκας ὡσαύτως σεμνάς μὴ διαβόλους νηφαλίους πιστὰς ἐν πᾶσιν
12Deacons must be husbands of only one wife, and good managers of their children and their own households.12Διάκονοι ἔστωσαν μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρες τέκνων καλῶς προϊστάμενοι καὶ τῶν ἰδίων οἴκων
13For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a high standing and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.13οἱ γὰρ καλῶς διακονήσαντες βαθμὸν ἑαυτοῖς καλὸν περιποιοῦνται καὶ πολλὴν παρρησίαν ἐν πίστει τῇ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ
14I am writing these things to you, hoping to come to you before long;14Ταῦτά σοι γράφω ἐλπίζων ἐλθεῖν πρὸς σὲ ‹ἐν τάχει›
15but in case I am delayed, I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.15ἐὰν δὲ βραδύνω ἵνα εἰδῇς πῶς δεῖ ἐν οἴκῳ Θεοῦ ἀναστρέφεσθαι ἥτις ἐστὶν ἐκκλησία Θεοῦ ζῶντος στῦλος καὶ ἑδραίωμα τῆς ἀληθείας
16By common confession, great is the mystery of godliness: He who was revealed in the flesh, Was vindicated in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Proclaimed among the nations, Believed on in the world, Taken up in glory.16Καὶ ὁμολογουμένως μέγα ἐστὶν τὸ τῆς εὐσεβείας μυστήριον Ὃς ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκί ἐδικαιώθη ἐν πνεύματι ὤφθη ἀγγέλοις ἐκηρύχθη ἐν ἔθνεσιν ἐπιστεύθη ἐν κόσμῳ ἀνελήμφθη ἐν δόξῃ
