It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do.1This is a trustworthy saying: If anyone aspires to be an overseer, he desires a noble task.
An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,2An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,
not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money.3not dependent on wine, not violent but gentle, peaceable, and free of the love of money.
He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity4An overseer must manage his own household well and keep his children under control, with complete dignity.
(but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?),5For if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how can he care for the church of God?
and not a new convert, so that he will not become conceited and fall into the condemnation incurred by the devil.6He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same condemnation as the devil.
And he must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he will not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.7Furthermore, he must have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the snare of the devil.
Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not double-tongued, or addicted to much wine or fond of sordid gain,8Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued or given to much wine or greedy for money.

Deacons must be husbands of only one wife, and good managers of their children and their own households.12A deacon must be the husband of but one wife, a good manager of his children and of his own household.
For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a high standing and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.13For those who have served well as deacons acquire for themselves a high standing and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.
I am writing these things to you, hoping to come to you before long;14Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these things
but in case I am delayed, I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.15in case I am delayed, so that you will know how each one must conduct himself in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.
By common confession, great is the mystery of godliness: He who was revealed in the flesh, Was vindicated in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Proclaimed among the nations, Believed on in the world, Taken up in glory.16By common confession, the mystery of godliness is great: He appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was proclaimed among the nations, was believed in throughout the world, was taken up in glory.
