When I would have healed Israel, then the iniquity of Ephraim was discovered, and the wickedness of Samaria: for they commit falsehood; and the thief cometh in, and the troop of robbers spoileth without. | 1When I would heal Israel, The iniquity of Ephraim is uncovered, And the evil deeds of Samaria, For they deal falsely; The thief enters in, Bandits raid outside, |
And they consider not in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness: now their own doings have beset them about; they are before my face. | 2And they do not consider in their hearts That I remember all their wickedness. Now their deeds are all around them; They are before My face. |
They make the king glad with their wickedness, and the princes with their lies. | 3With their wickedness they make the king glad, And the princes with their lies. |
They are all adulterers, as an oven heated by the baker, who ceaseth from raising after he hath kneaded the dough, until it be leavened. | 4They are all adulterers, Like an oven heated by the baker Who ceases to stir up the fire From the kneading of the dough until it is leavened. |
In the day of our king the princes have made him sick with bottles of wine; he stretched out his hand with scorners. | 5On the day of our king, the princes became sick with the heat of wine; He stretched out his hand with scoffers, |
For they have made ready their heart like an oven, whiles they lie in wait: their baker sleepeth all the night; in the morning it burneth as a flaming fire. | 6For their hearts are like an oven As they approach their plotting; Their anger smolders all night, In the morning it burns like a flaming fire. |
They are all hot as an oven, and have devoured their judges; all their kings are fallen: there is none among them that calleth unto me. | 7All of them are hot like an oven, And they consume their rulers; All their kings have fallen. None of them calls on Me. |
Ephraim, he hath mixed himself among the people; Ephraim is a cake not turned. | 8Ephraim mixes himself with the nations; Ephraim has become a cake not turned. |
Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knoweth it not: yea, gray hairs are here and there upon him, yet he knoweth not. | 9Strangers devour his strength, Yet he does not know it; Gray hairs also are sprinkled on him, Yet he does not know it. |
And the pride of Israel testifieth to his face: and they do not return to the LORD their God, nor seek him for all this. | 10Though the pride of Israel testifies against him, Yet they have not returned to the LORD their God, Nor have they sought Him, for all this. |
Ephraim also is like a silly dove without heart: they call to Egypt, they go to Assyria. | 11So Ephraim has become like a silly dove, without sense; They call to Egypt, they go to Assyria. |
When they shall go, I will spread my net upon them; I will bring them down as the fowls of the heaven; I will chastise them, as their congregation hath heard. | 12When they go, I will spread My net over them; I will bring them down like the birds of the sky. I will chastise them in accordance with the proclamation to their assembly. |
Woe unto them! for they have fled from me: destruction unto them! because they have transgressed against me: though I have redeemed them, yet they have spoken lies against me. | 13Woe to them, for they have strayed from Me! Destruction is theirs, for they have rebelled against Me! I would redeem them, but they speak lies against Me. |
And they have not cried unto me with their heart, when they howled upon their beds: they assemble themselves for corn and wine, and they rebel against me. | 14And they do not cry to Me from their heart When they wail on their beds; For the sake of grain and new wine they assemble themselves, They turn away from Me. |
Though I have bound and strengthened their arms, yet do they imagine mischief against me. | 15Although I trained and strengthened their arms, Yet they devise evil against Me. |
They return, but not to the most High: they are like a deceitful bow: their princes shall fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue: this shall be their derision in the land of Egypt. | 16They turn, but not upward, They are like a deceitful bow; Their princes will fall by the sword Because of the insolence of their tongue. This will be their derision in the land of Egypt. |
