The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven. | 1The Pharisees and Sadducees approached, and as a test, asked Him to show them a sign from heaven. |
He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. | 2He answered them: "When evening comes you say, It will be good weather because the sky is red.' |
And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times? | 3And in the morning, Today will be stormy because the sky is red and threatening.' You know how to read the appearance of the sky, but you can't read the signs of the times. |
A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed. | 4An evil and adulterous generation demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah." Then He left them and went away. |
And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread. | 5The disciples reached the other shore, and they had forgotten to take bread. |
Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. | 6Then Jesus told them, "Watch out and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees." |
And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread. | 7And they discussed among themselves, "We didn't bring any bread." |
Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread? | 8Aware of this, Jesus said, "You of little faith! Why are you discussing among yourselves that you do not have bread? |
Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? | 9Don't you understand yet? Don't you remember the five loaves for the 5,000 and how many baskets you collected? |
Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? | 10Or the seven loaves for the 4,000 and how many large baskets you collected? |
How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? | 11Why is it you don't understand that when I told you, Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees,' it wasn't about bread?" |
Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. | 12Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the yeast in bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. |
When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? | 13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" |
And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. | 14And they said, "Some say John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets." |
He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? | 15"But you," He asked them, "who do you say that I am?" |
And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. | 16Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God!" |
And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. | 17And Jesus responded, "Simon son of Jonah, you are blessed because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father in heaven. |
And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. | 18And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the forces of Hades will not overpower it. |
And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. | 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth is already bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth is already loosed in heaven." |
Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ. | 20And He gave the disciples orders to tell no one that He was the Messiah. |
From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. | 21From then on Jesus began to point out to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day. |
Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. | 22Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, "Oh no, Lord! This will never happen to You!" |
But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men. | 23But He turned and told Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me because you're not thinking about God's concerns, but man's." |
Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. | 24Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wants to come with Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me. |
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. | 25For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me will find it. |
For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? | 26What will it benefit a man if he gains the whole world yet loses his life? Or what will a man give in exchange for his life? |
For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. | 27For the Son of Man is going to come with His angels in the glory of His Father, and then He will reward each according to what he has done. |
Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. | 28I assure you: There are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom." |
