1God arises, and his enemies are scattered. Those who hate him flee from his presence. | 1For the director of music. Of David. A psalm. A song. May God arise, may his enemies be scattered; may his foes flee before him. |
2As smoke is driven away, so you drive them away. As wax melts in the presence of fire, so the wicked die in the presence of God. | 2May you blow them away like smoke-- as wax melts before the fire, may the wicked perish before God. |
3But the righteous rejoice and exult before God; they are overwhelmed with joy. | 3But may the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; may they be happy and joyful. |
4Sing to God! Sing praise to his name! Exalt the one who rides on the clouds. The LORD is his name. Be jubilant in his presence. | 4Sing to God, sing in praise of his name, extol him who rides on the clouds; rejoice before him--his name is the LORD. |
5A father to orphans and an advocate for widows is God in his holy dwelling place. | 5A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. |
6God causes the lonely to dwell in families. He leads prisoners into prosperity, but rebels live on parched land. | 6God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land. |
7God, when you led out your people, when you marched through the desert, Interlude | 7When you, God, went out before your people, when you marched through the wilderness, |
8the land quaked. Indeed, the heavens poured down rain from the presence of God, this God of Sinai, from the presence of God, the God of Israel. | 8the earth shook, the heavens poured down rain, before God, the One of Sinai, before God, the God of Israel. |
9God, you poured out abundant rain on your inheritance. When Israel was weary, you sustained her. | 9You gave abundant showers, O God; you refreshed your weary inheritance. |
10Your people live there; you sustain the needy with your goodness, God. | 10Your people settled in it, and from your bounty, God, you provided for the poor. |
11The Lord issues a command. Numerous are the women who announce the news: | 11The Lord announces the word, and the women who proclaim it are a mighty throng: |
12"Kings of armies retreat and flee, while the lady of the house divides the spoil. | 12"Kings and armies flee in haste; the women at home divide the plunder. |
13When you men lie down among the sheepfolds, you are like the wings of the dove covered with silver, with its feathers in glittering gold." | 13Even while you sleep among the sheep pens, the wings of my dove are sheathed with silver, its feathers with shining gold." |
14When the Almighty scattered the kings there, there was snow on Mt. Zalmon. | 14When the Almighty scattered the kings in the land, it was like snow fallen on Mount Zalmon. |
15The mountain of God is as the mountain of Bashan; a mountain of many peaks is Mount Bashan. | 15Mount Bashan, majestic mountain, Mount Bashan, rugged mountain, |
16You mountains of many peaks, why do you watch with envy the mountain in which God has chosen to dwell? Indeed, the LORD will live there forever. | 16why gaze in envy, you rugged mountain, at the mountain where God chooses to reign, where the LORD himself will dwell forever? |
17God's chariots were many thousands. The Lord was there with them at Sinai in holiness. | 17The chariots of God are tens of thousands and thousands of thousands; the Lord has come from Sinai into his sanctuary. |
18You ascended to the heights, you took captives. You received gifts among mankind, even the rebellious, so the LORD God may live there. | 18When you ascended on high, you took many captives; you received gifts from people, even from the rebellious-- that you, LORD God, might dwell there. |
19Blessed be the Lord who daily carries us. God is our deliverer. | 19Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens. |
20God is for us the God of our deliverance. The Lord GOD rescues us from death. | 20Our God is a God who saves; from the Sovereign LORD comes escape from death. |
21God surely strikes the heads of his enemies, even the hairy heads of those who continue in their guilt. | 21Surely God will crush the heads of his enemies, the hairy crowns of those who go on in their sins. |
22The Lord says, "From Bashan I will bring them, I will bring them from the depths of the sea, | 22The Lord says, "I will bring them from Bashan; I will bring them from the depths of the sea, |
23that your feet may wade through blood. The tongues of your dogs will have their portions from your enemies." | 23that your feet may wade in the blood of your foes, while the tongues of your dogs have their share." |
24They have observed your processions, God, the processions of my God, my king, in the sanctuary. | 24Your procession, God, has come into view, the procession of my God and King into the sanctuary. |
25The singers are in front, the musicians follow, strumming their stringed instruments among the maidens who are playing their tambourines. | 25In front are the singers, after them the musicians; with them are the young women playing the timbrels. |
26Bless God in the great congregation, the LORD who is the fountain of Israel. | 26Praise God in the great congregation; praise the LORD in the assembly of Israel. |
27Little Benjamin is there, leading them, and the princes of Judah all together with the princes of Zebulun and the princes of Naphtali. | 27There is the little tribe of Benjamin, leading them, there the great throng of Judah's princes, and there the princes of Zebulun and of Naphtali. |
28Summon the power of your God, the power, God, that you have shown us. | 28Summon your power, God; show us your strength, our God, as you have done before. |
29Because of your Temple in Jerusalem, kings bring tribute to you. | 29Because of your temple at Jerusalem kings will bring you gifts. |
30Rebuke the wildlife that lives among the reeds, the nations that congregate like bulls and cows, humbling themselves with pieces of silver, for God scatters the nations that delight in battle. | 30Rebuke the beast among the reeds, the herd of bulls among the calves of the nations. Humbled, may the beast bring bars of silver. Scatter the nations who delight in war. |
31Envoys will come from Egypt. Let the Ethiopians stretch out their hands to God. | 31Envoys will come from Egypt; Cush will submit herself to God. |
32You kingdoms of the earth, sing to God! Sing praises to the Lord, Interlude | 32Sing to God, you kingdoms of the earth, sing praise to the Lord, |
33to the one who rides the heavens, the ancient heavens. Behold! He thunders with a mighty voice. | 33to him who rides across the highest heavens, the ancient heavens, who thunders with mighty voice. |
34Ascribe power to God, whose glory is over Israel, whose power is in the skies. | 34Proclaim the power of God, whose majesty is over Israel, whose power is in the heavens. |
35You are awesome, God, from your sanctuaries. The God of Israel is the one who gives strength and power to the people. Blessed be God! | 35You, God, are awesome in your sanctuary; the God of Israel gives power and strength to his people. Praise be to God! |
