| 1During the reign of Jotham's son Ahaz, Uzziah's grandson, king of Judah, King Rezin of Aram and Remaliah's son Pekah, king of Israel, approached Jerusalem and waged war against it, but they could not mount an attack against it. | 1In the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah, Rezin the king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah the king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to wage war against it, but could not yet mount an attack against it. |
| 2When it was reported to the house of David, "Aram has joined forces with Ephraim!" the heart of the people of Ahaz trembled like forest trees in a windstorm. | 2When the house of David was told, “Syria is in league with Ephraim,” the heart of Ahaz and the heart of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake before the wind. |
| 3So the LORD told Isaiah, "Go out to meet Ahaz, you and your son Shear-jashub, at the end of the aqueduct of the Upper Pool that proceeds along the highway to Launderer's Field. | 3And the LORD said to Isaiah, “Go out to meet Ahaz, you and Shear-jashub your son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the Washer’s Field. |
| 4Tell him, 'Be careful, be calm, don't be afraid, and don't lose heart because of these two smoldering stumps of torches, that is, because of the fierce anger of Rezin, from Aram, and Remaliah's son. | 4And say to him, ‘Be careful, be quiet, do not fear, and do not let your heart be faint because of these two smoldering stumps of firebrands, at the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria and the son of Remaliah. |
| 5Aram, Ephraim, and Remaliah's son have plotted this evil against you: | 5Because Syria, with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, has devised evil against you, saying, |
| 6"Let's go attack Judah, let's terrorize it, and let's conquer it for ourselves. Then we'll install Tabeel's son as king!"' | 6“Let us go up against Judah and terrify it, and let us conquer it for ourselves, and set up the son of Tabeel as king in the midst of it,” |
| 7But this is what the Lord GOD has to say: "'It won't take place. It won't ever happen. | 7thus says the Lord GOD: “‘It shall not stand, and it shall not come to pass. |
| 8Because Aram's head is Damascus, and Rezin is its king, within sixty-five years Ephraim will be shattered as a people. | 8For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin. And within sixty-five years Ephraim will be shattered from being a people. |
| 9Furthermore, Ephraim's head is Samaria, and Remaliah's son is its king. If all of you don't keep on believing, you'll never remain loyal.'" | 9And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah. If you are not firm in faith, you will not be firm at all.’” |
| 10Later on, the LORD spoke to Ahaz again: | 10Again the LORD spoke to Ahaz: |
| 11"Ask a sign from the LORD your God. Make it as deep as Sheol or as high as heaven above." | 11“Ask a sign of the LORD your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.” |
| 12But Ahaz replied, "I won't ask! I won't put the LORD to the test." | 12But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, and I will not put the LORD to the test.” |
| 13In reply, the LORD announced, "Please listen, you household of David. Is it such a minor thing for you to try the patience of men? Must you also try the patience of my God? | 13And he said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also? |
| 14"Therefore the LORD himself will give you a sign. Watch! The virgin is conceiving a child, and will give birth to a son, and his name will be called Immanuel. | 14Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. |
| 15He'll eat cheese and honey, when he knows enough to reject what's wrong and choose what's right. | 15He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. |
| 16However, before the youth knows enough to reject what's wrong and choose what's right, the land whose two kings you dread will be devastated." | 16For before the boy knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land whose two kings you dread will be deserted. |
| 17"The LORD will bring to you, to your people, and to your ancestor's house such a time as has never been since Ephraim broke away from Judah—the king of Assyria will come. | 17The LORD will bring upon you and upon your people and upon your father’s house such days as have not come since the day that Ephraim departed from Judah—the king of Assyria!” |
| 18"At that time, the LORD will call for flies that will come from far away—from the headwaters of Egypt's rivers—and for bees that are in the land of Assyria. | 18In that day the LORD will whistle for the fly that is at the end of the streams of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. |
| 19They will all come and settle in the steep ravines, in the rocky crevices, in all the thorn bushes, and in all the pastures. | 19And they will all come and settle in the steep ravines, and in the clefts of the rocks, and on all the thornbushes, and on all the pastures. |
| 20At that time, the LORD will hire a barber to come from beyond the Euphrates River—that is, the king of Assyria—and he will shave your heads, your leg hair, and your beards, too. | 20In that day the Lord will shave with a razor that is hired beyond the River—with the king of Assyria—the head and the hair of the feet, and it will sweep away the beard also. |
| 21"At that time, a man will keep alive a heifer and two sheep, | 21In that day a man will keep alive a young cow and two sheep, |
| 22and because of the abundance of milk that they give, he will have cheese to eat, since whoever remains in the land will be eating cheese and honey. | 22and because of the abundance of milk that they give, he will eat curds, for everyone who is left in the land will eat curds and honey. |
| 23"At that time, every place where once there were a thousand vines worth a thousand shekels of silver, only briars and thorns will grow. | 23In that day every place where there used to be a thousand vines, worth a thousand shekels of silver, will become briers and thorns. |
| 24"People will come there armed with bows and arrows, because the entire land will be nothing but briers and thorns. | 24With bow and arrows a man will come there, for all the land will be briers and thorns. |
| 25As for all the hills that used to be cultivated with a hoe, you won't go there, because you'll fear iron briars and thorns. Nevertheless, those hills will be reserved as a pasture where cattle will feed and where sheep will graze." | 25And as for all the hills that used to be hoed with a hoe, you will not come there for fear of briers and thorns, but they will become a place where cattle are let loose and where sheep tread. |
